Free admission for children and young people to free museums

City of Chemnitz enables children and young people to participate more in museum education programmes

From 1 January 2018, admission to free museums will be free of charge for children and young people.

Following a decision by the Culture Committee of Chemnitz City Council, it will be possible for children and young people to experience free participation in art and culture in the new year, regardless of financial circumstances. This means that from the beginning of the year, admission for children and young people as well as schoolchildren will also be free of charge at independent museums.

This decision is another important step towards supporting the key issue of children and young people's participation in knowledge transfer and the educational mission of museums in Chemnitz. Up to now, this opening for more participation could only be realised in municipal museums. The resolution passed by the city council now builds on this and picks up on the positive experiences made to date. As a result, the museum fee regulations will be standardised in a central point.

From 1 January 2018, children and young people up to the age of 18 will have free admission to the following museums

  • Deutsches SPIELEmuseum e. V. Chemnitz
  • Chemnitz Tram Museum (AG Straßenbahnfreunde Chemnitz e. V.)
  • Museum for Saxon Vehicles Chemnitz e. V.
  • Saxon Railway Museum e. V. Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf
  • Museum of Technology Rope Drainage System (Railway Friends "RICHARD HARTMANN" Chemnitz e. V.)
  • Ebersdorf School Museum e. V.

The City of Chemnitz covers the costs of the loss of income from free admission for the museums mentioned. 30,000 euros have been budgeted for this in 2018.

All independent museums that received support from the City of Chemnitz's municipal arts and culture funding in 2017 and have previously charged admission to children and young people are eligible.

In order to bring continuity to the model, the City of Chemnitz is examining whether free admission for Chemnitz's independent museums can be maintained for the next two-year budget 2019/2020.

Free admission already exists at the Neue Sächsische Galerie and the Arctic-Alpine Garden. The association Lern- und Gedenkort Kaßberg-Gefängnis e. V. grants free admission to its programmes.
