From tomorrow, 22 March - World Water Day - the three municipal drinking fountains will be bubbling again. In addition to the three existing drinking fountains, from this year there will also be a drinking fountain at the newly built Küchwaldpavillon and one at Konkordiaplatz. The latter will go into operation in April. In addition, a new drinking fountain will be built on Brühl Boulevard, which will also be available from April.
For the newly constructed drinking fountains, the City of Chemnitz is focussing on modern design and materials that are intended to prevent vandalism and soiling.
On Wednesday 26 March, the fountain season for the city's fountains begins with the commissioning of the castle pond fountain. The early start is intended to actively influence the ecology of the castle pond through a higher oxygen input as a result of the increased water movement.
The other 21 fountains in the city of Chemnitz will then be put into operation between 7 April and 30 May in the following order:
- Market fountain
- Klapperbrunnen fountain
- Rosenhof fountain (in front of the tower block)
- Ginkgo fountain basin (Rosenhof)
- Jakobikirchplatz water feature
- Bear Fountain
- Zipper fountain (castle pond island)
- Am Roten Turm fountain (Stadthallenpark)
- Park of Youth (Schloßbergpark)
- Illuminated fountain (castle pond)
- Wedding fountain at the IHK building (Straße der Nationen)
- Fountain "Völkerfreundschaft" (Street of Nations)
- Umbrella fountain (Street of Nations)
- Children's fountain (Street of Nations)
- Brühl Boulevard fountain
- "Hair washing" fountain in Albertipark (Sonnenberg)
- Azzano fountain (Am Rathaus street)
- Sachsenhalle water basin (Dr.-Salvador-Allende-Straße)
- Röhrsdorf ball fountain
205,000 has been budgeted for the maintenance of the fountains for the 2025 financial year.
In addition to the maintenance and management of the following fountains, companies and associations also sponsor contributions in kind and in cash:
- Sprudelstein Grüna - Sponsor Heimatverein Grüna
- Saxonia fountain - sponsored by the Kellnberger company
17 of the above-mentioned fountains are maintained by the RAC company on the basis of a service contract. The Marktbrunnen and Klapperbrunnen fountains are maintained by Brunnenmeisterei M.& S. Schreier GmbH from Thuringia.
The ball fountain in Röhrsdorf is operated by the local community itself, and the fountain in Grüna is also maintained by the local heritage association.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to operate six fountains. These include the fountain on Falkeplatz, the fountain basins on Seeberplatz, the fountain at the Pelzmühle, two fountain basins on Brückenstraße and the fountain on the corner of Dresdner Straße and Hainstraße.
