Foundation stone laid for extension to Johannes Kepler Grammar School

Date: 9 June, 1 p.m., at Johannes-Kepler-Gymnasium, Humboldtplatz 1

On Friday, 9 June at 1 pm, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will ceremonially lay the foundation stone for the extension to the Johannes Kepler Gymnasium, Humboldtplatz 1.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to attend.

A time capsule will also be embedded in the floor slab. However, this will only take place at a later date, as the floor slab cannot be entered at present due to the progress of the construction work. The copper time capsule will contain a daily newspaper from 9 June 2023, construction plans for the extension, a set of hard cash and materials from the school.

The extension to the existing building was approved by the city council in July 2022 in order to ensure that the Johannes Kepler Grammar School can accommodate four pupils and create good learning conditions.

The new building will house six specialist classrooms (three physics, three chemistry) and preparation rooms. In addition, the catering kitchen (Cook and Freeze) and the school canteen for approx. 190 students will be relocated there in three passages.

Due to the extension, individual rooms in the existing building will also be rearranged. The reorganisation of the canteen and a Cook and Freeze serving kitchen was only an interim solution in the old building. The outdoor facilities will also be redesigned to accommodate the new extension.

The entire lighting will be fitted with LED lights. The building alarm system will be extended so that the new building also has an alarm system for threatening and dangerous situations.

The preparatory construction measures such as demolition of the caretaker's area, clearing of the construction site, earthworks, gable protection and explosive ordnance investigation were completed in mid-March. The construction site was set up and the shell construction began at the end of March.

The extension is scheduled to go into operation at the start of the 2024/25 school year.

Work on the existing specialist rooms in the existing building in the area of the extension cannot begin until October 2024, when the new specialist rooms can be used.

The second construction phase in the existing building (former dining room) will begin with a time delay from November 2024 in consultation with the school management. The plan is to complete this second construction phase by the end of April 2025.

The costs will total 6.45 million euros.
