Forgotten worlds and blind spots in the media
Adult education centre: Exhibition from 4 September at the TIETZ - Online lecture on 5 September, from 7.30 to 9 pm
From Monday, 4 September, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre will be showing an exhibition entitled "Forgotten worlds and blind spots. The media neglect of the Global South". It presents the results of many years of media research into the presence of information from the Global South in the daily news. The travelling exhibition is open to the public until 13 October in the VHS Gallery on the 4th floor of the TIETZ.
A study by the University of Heidelberg, which analysed more than 5,500 broadcasts of the Tagesschau from 1996 and 2007 to 2021, among other things, shows that the distribution of reports is geographically very unbalanced: while the so-called West receives a disproportionately high amount of attention, numerous countries in the Global South are massively and constantly neglected, sometimes even ignored. Hunger, cholera, humanitarian crises and the devastating consequences of weather events in the countries of the Global South are only a marginal topic in the major media in Germany and Europe.
On Tuesday, 5 September, from 7.30 to 9 p.m., interested parties are invited to an online lecture on the same topic. Heidelberg researcher Dr Ladislaus Ludescher, who led the long-term study, will present and discuss the results in more detail.
