"Forgeries, transformations" at the Yorck Centre
The beautiful appearance of pictures, houses and people - Burkhard Müller reads from his latest book on 13 September 2016
The Chemnitz-based author Burkhard Müller provides fascinating insights into the art of pretence in his entertaining descriptions of the world of appearances. Müller will be reading from his latest book on 13 September 2016 at 6:30 pm in the Yorck-Center district centre, in the café and bistro of the Göpfert bakery. The event is a cooperation between Poet|bewegt e. V. and the Chemnitz City Library. Admission is free.

Art forgers and impostors shake our firmly held convictions about what is true and what is false. Because the transitions between deception and transformation, reality and appearance are often fluid. When Wolfgang Beltracchi is able to paint classical modernist paintings more genuinely than the original artists, when Gert Postel, a trained postman, works for years unchallenged as a senior doctor in a mental hospital, when a republic rebuilds a royal palace even though it has no idea how to use it - what does that say about our self-image?
Burkhard Müller investigates sensational forgeries and transformations of the recent past, which suddenly make what was once considered an iron certainty appear very dubious. Pictures, houses and people can always be something completely different from what we believe.
The author:
Burkhard Müller, born in 1959, is a lecturer in Latin at Chemnitz University of Technology, literary critic, journalist and author. He writes regularly for the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and "Die Zeit". In 2008, he was awarded the Alfred Kerr Prize for Literary Criticism. Müller is a member of the PEN Centre Germany.
