Flood situation on Chemnitz rivers remains tense
After further heavy flooding on Friday afternoon, the flood situation in Chemnitz remains tense. The water level of the Chemnitz is currently 2.53 m, which is flood warning level 2. The Würschnitz is currently at warning level 2 with rising water levels, the Zwönitz is still at warning level 1. The Pleißenbach reached the highest flood warning level 4 for some time in the afternoon and is currently at warning level 3 with a downward trend, while the Kappelbach is currently at flood warning level 2.
Residents along the river sections affected by warning levels were informed by siren, loudspeaker announcements and the SMS warning service. All rivers are continuously monitored and regularly checked by the professional fire brigade, volunteer fire brigades and the public order office.
Two fire stations of the professional fire brigade, 13 of the 15 volunteer fire brigades and numerous offices of the city administration were involved in the operations today. Since this morning, around 80 operations have been carried out throughout the city. Most of them involved pumping out flooded cellars and gullies, clearing water and mud from flooded streets and removing floating debris from bridges.
More than 3700 sandbags were distributed at the distribution points, and a further 20 tonnes of sand have been requested for use at the weekend. The following filling points for sandbags are open until around 9 pm: At the volunteer fire brigades Erfenschlag (Dr.-Karl-Wolf-Straße 1), Glösa (Bornaer Straße 205) and in Klaffenbach opposite the Baufeld company. If necessary, the distribution points can also be activated at short notice during the night. As planned, they will be open again tomorrow morning from 8am.
Due to the flooding, there may be temporary road closures due to flooded lanes. Drivers are asked to follow the signs and instructions of the emergency services on site.
As a precautionary measure, the city council will be operating a citizens' hotline on Saturday and Sunday from 8 am to 6 pm on 0371 488-3344, which anyone seeking advice can call.
