Flood situation on Chemnitz rivers has worsened
The flood situation in the city has worsened significantly following the heavy rainfall overnight, and the fire brigade has issued a disaster alert. The Chemnitz briefly exceeded the flood warning level 4 threshold this morning, the Zwönitz is currently at the highest warning level and the Würschnitz is currently at flood warning level 2. Some of the second-order watercourses overflowed their banks during the night.
All available forces are currently in action. In addition to the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire brigades, the technical relief organisation, ASB, DRK, police and city council offices are also involved in the operations. During the night, more than 130 operations were carried out throughout the city, with the main focus on Glösa and Röhrsdorf. In most cases, flooded cellars and gullies had to be pumped out, roads closed or cleared of water and mud and debris removed from bridges. On the corner of Leipziger Straße and Glauchauer Straße, a house collapsed due to its desolate roof structure, but no one was injured.
The State Flood Centre and the German Weather Service are warning of further, sometimes heavy, rainfall throughout Sunday, meaning that the situation is likely to get worse. Citizens living near bodies of water are therefore called upon to take appropriate precautions and to keep themselves informed about the weather and flood situation.
Residents living along river sections affected by warning levels will continue to be informed by sirens, loudspeaker announcements and the SMS warning service. All rivers are continuously monitored and regularly checked by the professional fire brigade, volunteer fire brigades and the public order office.
The following filling points for sandbags are also open today: At the volunteer fire brigades Erfenschlag (Dr.-Karl-Wolf-Straße 1), Glösa (Bornaer Straße 205) and in Klaffenbach opposite the Baufeld company. As all available forces are currently tied up in operations, citizens are called upon to provide themselves with bags and sand on site. The fire brigade has requested further supplies of sand for today.
Due to the flooding, there may be temporary road closures near the river due to flooded carriageways, currently including Annaberger Straße (partially), Chemnitztalstraße (partially), roads in Glösa and Röhrsdorf. Drivers are asked to follow the signs and instructions of the emergency services on site.
The municipal swimming pool must remain closed today due to the flooding of the Chemnitz.
