Flood protection on the Würschnitz

Information event: 6 June, 6.30 pm, Krystallpalast Klaffenbach

On Tuesday, 6 June at 6.30 pm, Mayor Knut Kunze, the Klaffenbach local council and the City of Chemnitz's environmental department are inviting all interested residents of the City of Chemnitz, primarily from the districts of Klaffenbach and Harthau, to a public information event. The aim is to explain the status of the implementation of the flood protection measures on the Würschnitz and to provide information on necessary changes in the use of land along smaller bodies of water and to highlight further options for action. The venue is the Krystallpalast Klaffenbach, Klaffenbacher Hauptstraße 52.

Representatives of the media are also invited.

Since the floods of 2002 at the latest, fear of the devastating consequences of floods has once again been present in Chemnitz and has fuelled the demand for improved flood protection, not only among those directly affected. Since then, extensive measures have already been implemented on the Würschnitz. However, the heavy rainfall events in August and September 2022 have also clearly shown, particularly in the Klaffenbach district, that even very small watercourses can quickly unleash destructive forces in corresponding weather situations.

Representatives from the State Dam Administration, the State Flood Centre, the Saxony Flood Preparedness Competence Centre, the University of Applied Sciences, the Transport and Civil Engineering Office and the Environmental Agency will report on the following topics:

  • Current status of the implementation of the flood protection measures on the Würschnitz in Chemnitz-Klaffenbach and Chemnitz-Harthau (measures M1 to M5) and on the updating of the flood hazard maps and the flood risk management plan for the Würschnitz
  • Current status and new techniques for forecasting and warning of flood hazards
  • Options for flood prevention and presentation of the flood prevention certificate
  • Evaluation of the Klaffenbach water inspection and the resulting demands on riparian owners

Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity to address questions and suggestions directly to the respective speakers.
