On Thursday 18 June, the city of Chemnitz opened a new chapter in its international economic relations with the first Taiwan Business Day. In the Green Salon at the Town Hall, representatives from business, academia, politics and the public sector met with a delegation of Taiwanese companies and institutions to explore opportunities for cooperation, investment and technology transfer.
The event was opened by Lord Mayor Sven Schulze, alongside representatives from the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and the City of Chemnitz’s Economic Affairs Department. The focus was on the future-oriented topics of microelectronics, semiconductor technologies, innovation and skills development – areas of strategic importance for both Taiwan and the Chemnitz economic region.
Mayor Sven Schulze said: “Taiwan Business Day has impressively demonstrated the potential that lies in closer cooperation between Chemnitz and Taiwan. Our city offers excellent conditions for technology-oriented companies and is, at the same time, an attractive location for international investment.”
In the specialist presentations, experts outlined current developments in the Taiwanese economy, investment opportunities and successful examples of German-Taiwanese cooperation. Dr Eva Langerbeck, Managing Director of the German Economic Office in Taipei, provided an insight into economic relations between Taiwan and Germany. Representatives from the Chemnitz-based companies 3D-Micromac and scia Systems presented innovative solutions for laser micro-machining and ion beam etching in the semiconductor manufacturing of the future. The event was moderated by Dr Martina Vogel, Chemnitz Community Manager for the industry association Silicon Saxony e. V.
Particular attention was paid to the exchange between the participating companies. Numerous discussions provided an opportunity to establish contacts and explore potential joint projects. The delegation also gained insights into Chemnitz’s economic and technological development, as well as the strengths of the regional innovation ecosystem.
The city of Chemnitz regards the inaugural Taiwan Business Day as a success. The high level of interest shown by participants demonstrates the importance of international partnerships for the region’s economic development. The aim now is to build on the contacts made in the long term and to establish further formats for German-Taiwanese exchange.
With Taiwan Business Day, Chemnitz is positioning itself as a city committed to international openness, innovation and the active shaping of global economic relations. In September, the City of Chemnitz’s Economic Development Department will continue its activities in Taiwan. At SEMICON Taiwan, Chemnitz will be presented as an attractive location for investment and technology, and active efforts will be made to attract new businesses to the city.
