First mammal offspring at the zoo in 2016 - still well wrapped!
The Bennett's kangaroos have offspring, the first young animal occasionally peeps out of the pouch, especially when the sun is shining. You can also see its movements in the pouch.
It was born a few weeks ago. Bennett's kangaroo offspring are born after a gestation period of around 30 days and weigh less than one gram.
The hairless little cub then crawls into the pouch on its own, sucks on a teat and spends the next few months there. As they develop, they leave this protection, first for short, then for longer periods. In the event of danger or excitement, however, the young then like to flee back into their mother's pouch, even if they already seem to be far too big for it.
The Chemnitz group of Bennett's kangaroos currently consists of one male and three females. There have been many kangaroo offspring at Chemnitz Zoo, but not yet from the animals currently living here. The male is one of the zoo's own offspring, the females come from other zoos.
