First literature scholarship holder of the city of Chemnitz introduces herself

On Tuesday, 11 October at 7.30 pm, the first literary scholarship holder of the city of Chemnitz will introduce herself at the Neue Sächsische Galerie im Tietz, Moritzstraße 20.
Arna Aley will live in Chemnitz until March 2023, during which time she will engage with the city and region, participate in the socio-political and cultural discourse and enrich it with her own contributions. She was selected from 41 applications from all over Germany and Austria for the City of Chemnitz's first literature scholarship.
The event is open to the public and admission is free of charge. Registration is requested at information(at)stadtbibliothek-chemnitz.de. Representatives of the media are also invited.
After a welcome address by Dagmar Ruscheinsky, Mayor for Social Affairs, Youth, Culture and Sport, and a laudatory speech by Prof Ulrike Brummert, docteur d'Etat and member of the jury, Arna Aley will present her work to date and her project for Chemnitz.
About the person:
Arna Aley, born in Panevėžys, Lithuania, studied scenic writing at the University of the Arts in Berlin and violoncello at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius/Lithuania. She has worked as an assistant director, evening director and stage musician at the Berliner Ensemble, including with George Tabori and Claus Peymann. In 2009, she switched to film and was head of the directing department for the international multimedia project "DAU" (directed by Ilya Khrzhanovsky).
Arna Aley's theatre plays (represented by Verlag Felix Bloch Erben) have been awarded numerous prizes and scholarships and have premiered at the Berliner Ensemble, among others.
In 2019, she was the winner of the Berlin Senate Literature Scholarship.
She translates plays from Lithuanian into German and from German into Lithuanian, including plays by Sibylle Berg. Arna Aley lives in Berlin.
About the literature scholarship:
In February 2022, the Culture Committee decided to advertise a literary scholarship for the city of Chemnitz for the first time. The aim was to find a literary producer who would live and work in Chemnitz from October 2022 to March 2023. In line with the objectives of the "Kultur Raum Geben" cultural strategy, the residency scholarship is intended to mobilise creative people and artists. This creates an exchange between external and local creatives, but also with the urban community.
A total of 41 applications were submitted, which were assessed by a jury. The six-member jury was made up of the writer Hans Brinkmann (Chemnitz),
Prof. Ulrike Brummert, docteur d'Etat, cultural scientist, TU Chemnitz and member of the Chemnitz Cultural Advisory Board, Dr. Lutz Graner, literary scholar at the University of Bielefeld and owner of the Chemnitzer Eichenspinner Verlag, Marcus Heinke, project manager for culture at the Netzwerk für Kultur- und Jugendarbeit Chemnitz, Kerstin Hensel, author and professor of German verse and diction at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts (Berlin), and word artist and poetry slammer Stefanie Menschner (Chemnitz).
