On Wednesday 16 April at 8.30 a.m., representatives of the media are invited to a press event at the Kappelbach, Popowstraße bridge. A 6th grade class from Schönau secondary school will then officially adopt a stream.
Representatives of the hydraulic engineering construction management team at the City of Chemnitz's Transport and Civil Engineering Department will be on hand to answer any questions. Photo permissions from parents will be available.
This is the first watercourse sponsorship to be awarded by the City of Chemnitz. More are to follow this year, for example with interested and committed neighbours.
The aim of this pilot project is for pupils to identify with the stream and its importance in the vicinity of the school. The children will observe and document the water structure in a section of the Kappelbach over the course of the seasons, and they will collect rubbish during project days at the stream, which the city will take care of disposing of. A joint planting campaign is also possible.
Water sponsorships are recommended by the Saxon State Office for the Environment, Agriculture and Geology for water protection. Experience has shown that this form of public participation lays the foundations for cooperation between the city as the body responsible for watercourse maintenance (Transport and Civil Engineering Department, Bridges and Hydraulic Engineering Division) and local residents.
