On Saturday, 23 August, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Chemnitz goes rooftop. That's when the first Chemnitz rooftop festival "Bunte Dächer" will take place. At this festival, which is organised by the City of Chemnitz and is part of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 programme, visitors can enjoy views from 17 rooftops and vantage points in the city.
The official opening of the festival will take place on 23 August at 12 noon on the roof terrace of the student residence at Brühl 65. Representatives of the media are also invited to attend.
Among others, the Schocken department stores', the roof garden in the Wirkbau, the factory, the vocational school centre for technology 1 as well as the Schloßbergkirche with the Türmerwohnung and the Küchwaldbühne will be taking part. Many of the roofs are open all day from 10 am to 6 pm.
Some of the roofs can only be experienced as part of a guided tour, which can be booked via Chemnitz 2025 - Colourful Roofs. There will be a special programme at some locations, e.g. yoga sessions at the Marathon Tower, musical contributions at the youth hostel and various talks by international speakers at the Garage Campus.
The festival will open up new perspectives and a different view of the city. An opportunity to discuss potential uses for roof surfaces, to experience art and culture at unusual heights and to turn Chemnitz's roofscape into a vibrant place of community.
For example, guests on the roof of the Schocken can see that the roof of the eins building has been greened and bees are kept there - in keeping with the motto "C the Unseen".
The first Chemnitz Rooftop Festival is part of the "European Creative Rooftop Network" project. In preparation for the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, the city of Chemnitz was part of this four-year project, which was funded by "Creative Europe" and expired at the end of 2024. During the project period, the City of Chemnitz implemented various activities, such as international artist residencies, the design of the roof of the Stadthalle in collaboration with the Belgian artist Larsen Bervoets and students of the Chemnitz school model, as well as the construction of a green roof pilot to improve the quality of life on the garage campus.
