First Chemnitz patient dies of coronavirus

The first patient in the city of Chemnitz has died as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the public health department, it was a 90-year-old man with pre-existing conditions who tested positive for the virus and died last night.

Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig: "My deepest sympathy at this time is with everyone who was close to the deceased. It is a tragic situation for the whole city."

Ludwig once again appealed to all Chemnitz residents to adhere to the current rules. "This virus is highly dangerous. It is the task of all of us to continue to avoid social contact as much as possible. We must also protect the elderly and vulnerable people." Social distancing is still the order of the day.

A total of 134 people have tested positive in the city today, 26 of whom are receiving medical care in hospitals.
