Fire brigade operation at the community centre on Wall completed
Building has been reopened
The Chemnitz city fire brigade has reopened the community centre on the Wall, which has been closed since the early afternoon. No more abnormal readings were detected.
The building had been evacuated as a precaution in the early afternoon after the sprinkler system in the underground car park was triggered. The fire brigade's emergency services then detected abnormal readings in the ambient air.
It has not yet been possible to determine the cause beyond doubt. The source could be rubbish that has already been removed or the defective battery of a vehicle (e-bike or electric vehicle). The investigation into the cause is still ongoing.
Around 200 people were evacuated and registered as a precautionary measure. 13 people received medical care for clarification.
40 firefighters and two chemists were involved in the operation. The Chemnitz police department secured the building.
