City Library: Reading with Dieter Hermann Schmitz on 17 October, 6 p.m., TIETZ
On Monday, 17 October at 6 p.m., the City Library invites you to a reading with Dieter Hermann Schmitz in the Central Library in the TIETZ to mark the 60th anniversary of the Chemnitz-Tampere town twinning. The author will read from his humorous novel "Finnisch verheiratet. Or: In search of the most Finnish of all words". Admission is free.
What do you do when you're on an aeroplane and you're afraid you're about to crash into the Baltic Sea? Of course, you reach for your mobile phone and try to tell your loved ones at home that ... Just like you know it from American films. But the Finnish reality is different! While a flippant "I love you!" may help on the other side of the Atlantic, in the far north, action is needed. After the traumatic experience of an emergency landing, Hermann, a Finn by choice with Rhenish roots, is determined to make the whole family happy. At the same time, he takes part as a judge in a cultural project to find the most Finnish of all words. The search for the right word is as tricky as the best intentions at home.
In the early 1990s, university lecturer Dieter Hermann Schmitz came to Tampere to teach at the Goethe-Institut as part of a year abroad. He stayed for good. Today, the father of two, who is married to a Finnish woman, works at the University of Tampere and writes books on the side, such as "Die spinnen, die Finnen", which was a source of amusement for many Finland fans in 2011.
