Federal Transport Minister Dobrindt commissions review of Chemnitz-Leipzig route
Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt has commissioned a review of the extent to which electrification and double-track expansion of the Chemnitz-Leipzig railway line can still be included in the government's draft of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.
This is the result of a meeting with the Minister this morning with Mayor Barbara Ludwig and Chemnitz Member of Parliament Detlef Müller, on whose initiative the meeting at the Federal Ministry of Transport was organised.
In preparation for the talks and especially after the meeting, the Minister realised that the expansion of the line is important and crucial for the long-distance transport connections of the Chemnitz region. The connection via Leipzig also makes sense.
"I am very pleased that Federal Transport Minister Dobrindt has personally taken on the project," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig. "I am also pleased with his assessment of the situation and the commission he has given. I hope that this will give the Chemnitz-Leipzig line a chance."
Detlef Müller adds: "It was very important that we were able to talk to the minister about this in person today. It is simply unacceptable that Chemnitz and the surrounding area are the only major German city that can only be reached by regional trains. Chemnitz finally deserves a long-distance transport connection that does justice to its economic importance. The ball is now in the ministry's court - but we have a foot in the door."
"Today's talks were an important step in the right direction. Nevertheless, I would ask all those involved not to let up in their efforts for the project and to use every opportunity to participate so that the route expansion is included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan," said Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig.
Participation procedure for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan
Every citizen, every institution and every company is still invited to submit their objections to the plan electronically or in writing. The public participation process for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan is still running at the Federal Ministry of Transport until 2 May.
