Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan: Region appeals to railway boss

Together for the region: Call for participation in the participation process for the transport infrastructure plan

In a joint letter to the Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG, Dr Rüdiger Grube, Lord Mayor Barbara Ludwig, members of the Bundestag Frank Heinrich, Detlef Müller, Michael Leutert and Stephan Kühn express their views,
Prof. Dr Andreas Schubert, Rector of Chemnitz University of Technology, Dr h.c. Franz Voigt, President of the Chemnitz Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Dietmar Mothes, President of the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts and Prof. Dr Nils Kroemer, Plant Manager Chemnitz, Siemens AG and member of the Presidium of the Saxon Business Association, on the draft of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.

"With 250,000 inhabitants, Chemnitz is the third-largest city in eastern Germany. And it is growing. However, it has a unique selling point: it is not connected to the fast long-distance railway network.

Of all major German cities with more than 200,000 inhabitants, Chemnitz is the only one that does not have a fast long-distance transport connection. No other conurbation in Germany is as disconnected from long-distance transport as the Chemnitz region - and has been for ten years now.

It is irresponsible of the federal government and Deutsche Bahn AG to leave a nationally important business and research location with Chemnitz, a city of a quarter of a million inhabitants, so dependent on attractive rail transport. Not just at the moment, but for at least the next three decades. The Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 in its current version cements a situation that will be devastating for the economic strength of the city for generations to come," reads the letter.

The signatories therefore call on the head of the railway "on behalf of the people in the Chemnitz region to set the right course for the important Chemnitz - Leipzig expansion project. An efficient connection to the long-distance transport network is the prerequisite for the continued successful development of the region. This is and will only be possible via the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan."

Participation in the consultation process
Every citizen, every institution and every company is still invited to submit their objections to the plan electronically or in writing. The public participation process for the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan is still running at the Federal Ministry of Transport until 2 May.
