On Monday 29 June at 4 pm, representatives of the ‘Waldesluft’ Allotment Garden Association will welcome the assessment panel from the Federal Association of German Allotment Garden Associations (BKD). The allotment garden association is representing Saxony in the 26th national competition ‘Gardens in Urban Development 2026’ under the motto ‘Allotment Summer: cool and communal rather than sweltering and lonely’. With the site visit by the national jury, the Chemnitz allotment garden association is putting itself to the test against the best allotment garden associations in Germany.
Media representatives are invited to attend. The allotment garden complex can be reached via Dorfstraße in Grüna and the road Am Poltermühlenteich.
Participation in the national competition is the result of a successful track record in competitions at local and state level. Back in 2023, the “Waldesluft” allotment garden complex won the City of Chemnitz’s allotment garden competition, thereby qualifying for the 2025 state competition “Saxon Allotment Gardens in Town and Country”. There, it prevailed against competition from across Saxony and was honoured as the Free State’s most beautiful allotment garden site.
The allotment site particularly impressed the juries with its nature-oriented and community-focused concept. Fence-free garden layouts, measures to promote biodiversity, a natural garden, environmental education programmes for children and an active community life exemplify the combination of ecological responsibility and social interaction.
The national competition recognises allotment garden sites that provide a special impetus to their local environment through their contributions to urban planning, ecology, horticulture and social life. At the same time,
, local authorities are recognised for promoting allotment gardening as an important component of sustainable urban development.
The ‘Waldesluft’ allotment garden complex impressively demonstrates the contribution allotment gardens make to quality of life, biodiversity and social cohesion.
