Extensive construction work continues at the municipal pool
Sauna reopens on 12 October - 25-metre hall not before the end of November
Various construction works are currently running in parallel at full speed at the Stadtbad: in addition to scheduled or legally required repair and maintenance work that was planned in the summer, the damage to the building and technology caused by the June floods must be repaired. This damage also caused unforeseen obstructions and delays in the ongoing renovation and renewal of the ventilation systems (details below).
As a result, the initially announced reopening of the sauna and 25-metre hall has been delayed somewhat, which was not foreseeable at the start of the season. According to the current state of construction and planning, the sauna is scheduled to reopen on 12 October. The 25-metre hall cannot go back into operation before the end of November. Despite the problems, the 50-metre hall has been open to bathers again since 25 August.
Scheduled work and damage repair are running in parallel
Among other things, the scheduled annual maintenance and repair work and the basic cleaning of the splash water tanks, the swimming pools and the entire sanitary areas are currently taking place. In addition, numerous small repairs are carried out, for example in the tiling area or on fittings. The inspections and maintenance work on the pool facilities required by law are also carried out regularly during the summer closure period of the municipal pool and before it reopens.
As a result of the extensive damage caused by the floods, however, many unscheduled but essential repair measures have been commissioned. Some of these had to be re-planned from an engineering perspective. In addition to the electrical system, the flooding in the basement of the municipal swimming pool also affected many pumps and the electronic control and regulation systems. Experts estimate the amount of damage to the municipal swimming pool at around 350,000 euros.
The amount of water that has penetrated has significantly exceeded the previous record water level from the August floods of 2002, with all its damaging effects. The protective measures implemented since 2002 have therefore not proved to be sufficiently effective in all areas of the municipal swimming pool.
The 26 individual construction measures currently underway as part of the damage repairs, such as repairing the heating system, relocating the control technology, drying out the pump technology and repairing the electrical systems, will not be completed until the end of November this year at the earliest.
The clean-up work also had to be coordinated with the scheduled work to refurbish the ventilation systems and fire protection upgrades to the air distribution systems. As part of the planned construction work on the ventilation systems, the central ventilation units in the sauna and the 25-metre hall will be completely replaced and the corresponding rooms will be completely refurbished. As part of this work, complete air distribution systems will be replaced and in some cases customised. The financial scope of these measures amounts to approx. 1,000,000 euros.
50-metre hall to receive new ventilation system in 2014
The next construction phase, the renewal of the ventilation system and the implementation of the existing fire protection concept for the air distribution systems in the 50-metre hall, will begin in January. This new system is also intended to improve the quality of the space and further reduce operating costs. The hall will be closed for the work from 6 January 2014, and the 25-metre hall will be available as an alternative. This work should be completed by the end of September 2014.
