On Friday, 24 January at 12 noon, Lord Mayor Sven Schulze will open the new extension at Johannes Kepler Gymnasium, Humboldtplatz 1, which will house the canteen on the ground floor and various specialist cabinets on the first and first floors.
Representatives of the media are invited to attend. Access to the opening event is via the main entrance of the grammar school and is signposted on the ground floor in the direction of the canteen. The school choir and the school's instrumental group will provide the musical accompaniment.
Journalists will also be offered a press tour of the extension in advance, starting at 11.15 am. The meeting point is at the canteen entrance. For organisational reasons, please register in advance. (Please use the accreditation form in the appendix).
The three-storey extension, which has a full basement, was built using solid construction methods. In terms of design, the modern extension clearly stands out from the existing listed building and forms a new end along Humboldtplatz. It connects to the centre corridor axis of the existing building on each floor. The new extension was realised to the "Efficiency House 40" energy standard with a mechanical ventilation system. Photovoltaic modules on the flat roof will supply the school building with renewable electricity in future.
The outdoor facilities were also redesigned as part of the construction of the new extension. A barrier-free accessible terrace adjoins the dining hall to the existing schoolyard.
The outdoor area has been given a new basketball court and a new shot put facility has been installed in the sports area.
The new canteen with seating capacity for around 190 people on the ground floor and the associated catering kitchen (Cook & Freeze) have been in operation since the beginning of January 2025. Five subject classrooms, two preparation rooms and a laboratory for physics and chemistry are currently being equipped with teaching materials and will then be gradually taken over.
In the second construction phase, further work will follow in the existing building by the third quarter of 2025, for example the former dining room and former specialist classrooms will be remodelled.
The costs amount to approx. 7 million euros and are within the budget allocated according to the construction decision. The SAB approved fixed-amount funding totalling around 3.82 million euros for the project. The funding rate is 60 per cent.
Review
Various options were analysed to ensure that the Johannes Kepler Grammar School could accommodate four classes and to create improved learning conditions. On 13 July 2022, the city council decided to build an extension to the north gable of the existing building.
The preparatory construction measures such as earthworks, gable stabilisation and explosive ordnance investigation were completed in mid-March 2023. The shell construction work then began and the foundation stone was ceremoniously laid on 9 June 2023.
