Extension of the exemption from charges for electric and hybrid electric vehicles
At its meeting today, the City Council decided to extend the exemption from charges for electric and hybrid electric vehicles with the "E" registration number until 31 December 2021. The waiver of the special user fee obligation for car sharing vehicles with electric or hybrid engines with the "E" registration number was also extended until 31 December 2021. The city council will decide on a further extension until the end of 2021.
The owners of these vehicles do not have to pay parking fees in municipal car parks. This decision is intended to promote electric mobility in the city.
At its meeting on 5 April 2017, the city council approved the parking space concept for the city centre. In this concept, it was decided to exempt electric and hybrid electric vehicles with the vehicle registration number "E" from the obligation to pay parking fees until 31 December 2019 in accordance with the Electric Mobility Act, with the option of extending this period.
As at 31 October 2019, 278 electric and 1,229 hybrid electric vehicles were registered in Chemnitz. Around 15 to 20 electric and hybrid electric vehicles with the vehicle registration number "E" park free of charge every day in the car parks in the city centre.
The waiver of the special user fee for car-sharing vehicles with electric or hybrid motors is also intended to send a positive signal. It has been proven that one car-sharing vehicle replaces up to ten private cars in the long term, as many car-sharing users either refrain from buying a vehicle or get rid of their car.
