Experience ringing storks up close
Species identification day on 3 July, from 9 to 11 a.m., registration by 22 June
On Saturday, 3 July, from 9 to 11 a.m., the Chemnitz Young Nature Guards, together with the Chemnitz Environmental Agency and the Saxon State Foundation for Nature and the Environment, invite you to the "Species Identification Day" in Grüna. There you can experience the ringing of white storks live.
On this day, white stork representative Kai Schaarschmidt will explain why bird ringing is important for nature conservation. You can also watch him at work at the stork nest and ask questions.
The event is aimed at children who are interested in nature and nature conservation. Participation is free of charge and only possible by registering atclaudia.feger@stadt-chemnitz.debis by 22 June . (The number of participants is limited.) Participating children and young people will receive the exact location of the event with their binding registration.
Why is ringing necessary? There is a combination of letters and numbers on the ring, which is effectively the bird's identity card. This makes it possible to record where the bird is staying, where it moves to in winter and where its nest will later be.
A wide range of other data can be used to evaluate and analyse the settlement areas and population size of white storks in order to protect the birds.
