Expansion of Unritzstrasse decided
At its meeting yesterday, the city council decided to widen around 650 metres of Unritzstrasse between Riedstrasse and Pelzmühlenstrasse.
The road in the Rabenstein district is used by around 3,500 vehicles every day and is in a poor condition. It is mainly used for healthcare services at the DRK hospital. The revised road section will therefore be classified as an access road and neighbourhood road.
The road is planned with a standard width of 6 metres (in the event of two buses meeting with limited room for manoeuvre). A one-sided footpath with a width of 2.50 metres will be created along the entire route. A green area for tree planting will be created between Riedstrasse and the northern access road to the hospital. The 1.8 metre wide footpath on the south side between Riedstrasse and the access road to the hospital will be retained. With a 3 metre wide planting area, the future total width of Unritzstrasse will be 13.30 metres. The bus stops "DRK-Krankenhaus" and "Am Unritzbach" will be completely renovated and made barrier-free.
Ten bicycle racks are planned along Unritzstraße, which will be installed at the junctions and bus stops. New markings will be applied to the junctions and bus stops. The route runs along the existing road, no land acquisition is necessary. The lighting will also be renewed.
Six construction phases are planned in order to minimise or even eliminate disruption for local residents:
- Construction phase 1: Between Riedstraße and the DRK staff car park access road
- Construction phase 2: Between the DRK staff car park access road and the Unritzstraße residential area access road
- Construction phase 3: Between the access road to the Unritzstraße residential area and the access road to the Kulturpalast residential area
- Construction phase 4: Between the access road to the Kulturpalast residential area and Pelzmühlenstraße Nord
- Construction phase 5: Between Pelzmühlenstraße North and Pelzmühlenstraße South
- Construction phase 6: Between Pelzmühlenstraße Süd and the access road to the residential area Unritzstraße 34 - 36
A construction period of 13 months is planned. The start is planned for December 2024 with preparatory work. Unritzstraße will be fully closed in sections during the construction work, which is planned for the first time from March 2025. A diversion will be set up via Riedstraße, Oberfrohnaer Straße and Pelzmühlenstraße. A diversion plan with alternative stops will be drawn up for bus routes N16, 32, 43 and 253. The stops "Am Ried" and "DRK Krankenhaus" will be cancelled during construction phases 1 to 4, the stop "Am Unritzbach" during construction phases 5 and 6.
The project will be implemented in coordination with the utility companies, for example, planned expansion measures by Eins Energie will be carried out at the same time. This includes the renewal of the drinking water pipeline from Riedstraße to the DRK hospital and from Pelzmühlenstraße (south) to house no. 36 (and thus about 50 metres beyond the end of the road construction). Furthermore, the lighting is to be adapted to the new road cross-section, primarily at the start of construction up to the hospital. Two empty conduits will be laid throughout for electrical cables.
Six trees will have to be felled to ensure access to the hospital. After the construction work, new trees will be planted along the newly constructed green strip.
The city of Chemnitz is investing around 1.78 million euros in the expansion of Unritzstrasse. The measure is being financed by lump-sum allocations from the municipal budget for municipal road construction measures from the Saxon Financial Equalisation Act.
