Expansion of the "Chemnitz - Karlovy Vary" cycle route near Klaffenbach
Section from Im Wiesengrund to Eisenweg - construction starts on 4 October
On Tuesday, 4 October, construction work will begin on the expansion of the "Chemnitz - Karlovy Vary" cycle route south of Klaffenbach. The unsurfaced section of the Kirchweg between the "Im Wiesengrund" development boundary and the junction with the "Eisenweg" (west of the B95) will be converted into a surfaced cycle path. The construction work was originally scheduled to begin in mid-September. However, the start of construction had to be postponed due to heavy rainfall.
Over a length of around 1.24 kilometres, the asphalt surface will be constructed to a minimum width of three and a half metres and will have half-metre-wide verges on both sides.
However, before the asphalt surface can be laid, the existing unevenness must first be levelled out and the load-bearing capacity of the subsoil improved.
The upgrading of the path will make it easier for cyclists in particular to climb up to the Erzgebirge foothills with a difference in altitude of around 100 metres. Agricultural vehicles will still be able to use the road. However, there are no plans to open the road to private transport, especially cars and lorries.
To compensate for the loss of vegetation due to the sealing of the area, a 120 metre long and twelve metre wide field hedge will also be planted on Berbisdorfer Straße and a 150 square metre traffic area in Chemnitz City Park will be renaturalised and planted with greenery.
A total of around 253,000 euros has been budgeted for the construction of this section. The construction project is being financed with funding from the budget approved by the Saxon state parliament. The city of Chemnitz is contributing around 25,300 euros itself.
The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in December 2022. The work is being carried out by the company Chemnitzer Verkehrsbau GmbH.
