Exhibition opening on the occasion of the Museum Night
Natural History Museum presents special exhibition: "Exquisite nature - the stars of 2016"
A highlight of the 17th Chemnitz Museum Night on 21 May 2016 is the opening of the special exhibition "Exquisite Nature - The Stars of the Year 2016". From 6 p.m., seven selected and rare creatures from the local natural world will be presented for the first time at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz in TIETZ, Moritzstraße 20. Based loosely on the fairy tale Snow White, the exhibition asks: "Mirror, mirror on the wall, how is nature doing in our country?". Visitors can get answers from the mirror into nature and the hands-on activities organised by the museum's education department. Children from the age of three can paint plaster figures of fire salamanders, create a colourful sand painting or make an orchid hair clip. Fire salamanders, sand and orchids have each been named Nature Star of the Year 2016 in their respective categories.
A short break can be taken in Lurchi's reading corner, where the city library's reading mentors tell exciting stories about amphibians every hour. Brave visitors can enjoy a photo shoot with stick insects or tarantulas in the insectarium. Butterfly fans aged ten and over can preserve tropical butterflies for eternity in the butterfly preparation centre.
In addition to the two permanent exhibitions "The Petrified Forest of Chemnitz" and "The Sterzeleanum: A Forest of Precious Stones - Gift of the Volcanoes" at the TIETZ, the museum's current excavation site "The Window into Earth History" in the Sonnenberg district will also be open on Museum Night from 6 pm to 10 pm. The excavation team will be providing information on the latest research findings and inviting visitors to marvel at the once tropical oasis of ferns, horsetails and conifers under Chemnitz. Anyone arriving at the excavation site hungry can fortify themselves with a small snack.
The Chemnitz Museum of Natural History is one of the largest natural history museums in Saxony. Its tasks include the collection and preservation of natural objects, as well as research in the field of natural sciences and the presentation of its collections (palaeontology, geology and mineralogy, zoology, botany).
The Chemnitz Petrified Forest is one of the most important palaeobotanical fossil sites in the world.
