Exhibition opening: Chemnitz perspectives 1925 to 2025

On Thursday, 15 October at 11 a.m., representatives of the media are invited to a press conference to mark the opening of the exhibition "Chemnitz Perspectives 1925 to 2025" at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz. Dr Thorid Zierold and Christian Köhler, Luftfahrtverein Chemnitz e. V., will provide insights into the process of creating the exhibition and invite you to take a photographic journey through time in a hot air balloon over Chemnitz.
The exhibition will open on Thursday at 5 pm. Due to the current Corona regulations, only invited guests can attend the opening.
It is the fascination with the impossible that brought Christian Köhler from the Chemnitz Aviation Association, the Heimatland publishing house and Galerie Roter Turm to this project in 2018. The team's aim was to capture the position of the historical images as accurately as possible. This involved searching for high-quality aerial photographs and calculating the exact position of the photographer in the aeroplane or airship at the time. The contemporary aerial photographs shown in the exhibition were taken from the hot-air balloons of the Chemnitz Aviation Association. Christian Köhler developed a 3D model with potential locations in order to determine the exact position. Taking into account the variation in wind direction depending on the flight altitude, the airmen, driven by sporting ambition, navigated their way to the historical recording position. After seven years and over 150 flights, more than 60,000 images were taken. The special exhibition shows a selection of these. It combines aerial photographs from 1925 to the present day with visions of Chemnitz's urban development. The combination of the different perspectives is unique to date, as is the aeronautical approach of 3D navigation for the exact reproduction of the historical locations and perspectives. Visiting the special exhibition "Chemnitz Perspectives 1925 to 2025" is free of charge.
A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Natural History.
