Exhibition "Jewish life in Chemnitz"

Adult education centre: Midissage on 17 May, 5 p.m. in the VHS Gallery in the TIETZ

On Tuesday 17 May at 5 pm, the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre invites you to a midi opening in the VHS Gallery in the TIETZ. This marks the midpoint of the current exhibition on Jewish life, which vividly shows a piece of everyday life and culture in Judaism. Admission is free of charge.

The Chemnitz Adult Education Centre (VHS) has taken the anniversary year "1700 years of Jewish life in Germany" as an opportunity to take a closer look at Jewish life in Chemnitz and bring it closer to the people. In addition to the previously published volume "Die Volkshochschule Chemnitz und ihr jüdisches Erbe" (Chemnitz Adult Education Centre and its Jewish Heritage), a reader has now been published in simple language with the title "Jüdisches Leben in Chemnitz" (Jewish Life in Chemnitz).

The publication is accompanied by an exhibition of the same name, which conveys both the creation and the content of the book. In addition to culinary and musical delights, there will also be hands-on art at the midissage. All those interested are invited - inspired by the prints and ceramics - to get creative themselves.

The story:

As part of a literacy project, a book about Judaism, religion, culture, everyday life and Jewish life in Chemnitz was written together with functionally illiterate people. The project has been led and implemented by Anja Hüttner and Denise Wagner, both course instructors at the adult education centre, since 2021. The result is an extraordinary and sensual reading book in simple language. The extensive research and interviews conducted by the group themselves, as well as the specially designed artistic works, offer a profound and sensitive compilation of the diverse aspects of Jewish life here in Chemnitz.

The exhibition can be seen until 31 July 2022 in the VHS gallery on the 5th floor of the TIETZ from Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm.
