Exhibition in memory of the Chemnitz mechanical engineer Carl Gottlieb Irmscher
Invitation to the opening on Monday, 12 August, 15:30, Volksbank Chemnitz
To commemorate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Chemnitz mechanical engineer Carl Gottlieb Irmscher in 2013, the work of this little-known pioneer of the Industrial Revolution in Saxony is being honoured with an exhibition documenting the development of cotton spinning in Chemnitz and the surrounding area at the beginning of the 19th century.
The exhibition commemorating and paying tribute to Carl Gottlieb Irmscher, which runs from 12 August to 13 September 2013 on the premises of Volksbank Chemnitz eG, is being put together under the auspices of the Chemnitz History Society and the Chemnitz Citizens' Association and with the support of Volksbank Chemnitz eG. The City of Chemnitz is supporting the project through the City Archive and the Mayor's Office.
Representatives of the media are hereby invited to the exhibition opening on Monday, 12 August 2013, 3:30 pm, at Volksbank Chemnitz eG, Innere Klosterstraße 15 in Chemnitz.
Background: The programme of events to honour Carl Gottlieb Irmscher includes not only the exhibition on display at the Volksbank in September, but also a commemorative event combined with a colloquium.
For the initiators of the exhibition, the work of Carl Gottlieb Irmscher, born on 4 September 1763 in what is now the Chemnitz district of Euba, in conjunction with other contemporaries, is an important milestone in the transition from handcrafted to machine-operated construction of spinning machines. Irmscher was the first of the machine builders who equipped the cotton machine spinning mills in Harthau from 1799. At the beginning of the 19th century, he set up a mechanical engineering company on today's Zwickauer Straße, opposite Falkeplatz, which in 1825 was already employing 25 workers in the construction of spinning machines - urgently needed at the time in the new cotton spinning mills being established in Chemnitz and Saxony.
