Exhibition "Images of Knowledge: Europe, Chemnitz and me"
Opening on Wednesday, 18 October at the adult education centre
Next Wednesday, 18 October 2017, at 6 pm, the exhibition "Wissensbilder: Europe, Chemnitz and me" will open with music. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend. Admission is free.
"Wissensbilder" is an art and research project by Anja Weller and Julien Bucher, the aim of which is to sensitise young people in Chemnitz to Europe and Chemnitz. The young people were encouraged to reflect on themselves, their home town of Chemnitz and Europe by producing two pictures each.
Eyjafjallajökull, Batman, the fragility of the European Union, the financial crisis and a sunny city of pensioners: In the final exhibition of the "Knowledge Images" project, imagined worlds captured on paper by Chemnitz youngsters are presented, offering different, specific and differentiated views of Chemnitz and Europe. The exhibited visualisations were created by pupils aged 12-19 in 2010 and are now structured on picture panels in the style of Aby Warburg and placed in relation to each other. The individual perspectives of the young people, which have become visible through pictorial exploration, show symbols, orders and connotations that still have social significance and in some cases have only just become so. On the one hand, they point to the sensitivity of young people to their local and global environment and social trends and, on the other, to the importance of the visual in shaping and socialising people.
The exhibition can be seen until 16 November 2017 at the Volkshochschule Chemnitz (Tietz, VHS gallery in the corridors on the 4th floor) and is also related to Chemnitz's bid to become European Capital of Culture.
