Exhibition and readings on the subject of "Grief and consolation"

Adult education centre: Accompanying events on 16 and 28 November

An exhibition entitled "Was bleibt, ist Licht." (What remains is light), which deals with dealing with grief after difficult life events and the experience of comfort through small gestures, can be seen in the gallery of the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre on the 4th floor of the TIETZ until 30 November. The touching exhibition is accompanied by the event series "Grief and Consolation".

The exhibition shows 22 pictures by children's book illustrator Melanie Garanin, who sought her own way of dealing with her grief, anger and despair after the death of her young son. She found it by drawing animals that have one thing in common: They all carry a candle. Sometimes they carry it, sometimes they balance it on their heads, sometimes they lean against it - but they always guard their light like a treasure. The animals show what there are no words for. And what it is like when someone dies. The pictures make us pause, make us cry, but sometimes also make us smile.

Reading with artist Melanie Garanin

On Thursday, 16 November, from 7 to 8.30 pm in room 4.07, the artist Melanie Garanin will be our guest in person to present her book "NILS". The graphic novel is dedicated to her late son. In it, Melanie Garanin describes in drawings and texts what she felt after the loss of her child - pain and anger, but also beautiful memories and humour. The book describes grief as it is - and yet encourages.

Admission is free of charge. Bookings can be made online at www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2313025 or by telephone on 0371 488 4343.

Reading and discussion with grief counsellor Antje Przyborowski

On Tuesday, 28 November, from 6 to 7.30 p.m. in room 4.07, interested parties are invited to a discussion with grief counsellor Antje Przyborowski entitled "Supporting mourners sensitively". The experienced therapist will describe what is individually helpful and important when supporting mourners. How can you recognise people's needs and wishes? What about the fear of doing something wrong? Antje Przyborowski will talk about the experiences from her practice and discuss the possibilities of sensitive grief work with the participants.

Admission costs 12.80 euros. Registration is possible online at www.vhs-chemnitz.de/kurs/W2313030 or by telephone on 0371 488 4343.

All events in the "Grief and Consolation" series are organised in cooperation with the Evangelisches Forum Chemnitz.
