On Tuesday, 24 June at 5 pm, interested parties are invited to an excursion on the topic of landscape conservation through grazing with sheep. The excursion via the old parade ground in Ebersdorf lasts approx. 2 hours. The meeting point is Max-Saupe-Straße 77 (opposite the supermarket).
Participation is free of charge. We recommend sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing as well as binoculars.
The excursion is intended to show how landscape conservation through extensive, nature-friendly grazing has a positive effect on the character of the area and how insects and birds benefit from it. Kerstin Herbig from the Josef Schwaiger transhumance sheep farm will report on the everyday life and challenges of sheep grazing. Jens Börner from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the City of Chemnitz's Environmental Agency will provide an insight into the special nature conservation features of the area and the history of the former parade ground.
Since the 1990s, the former military property on Max-Saupe-Straße has been grazed with sheep by a travelling sheep farm in cooperation with the Chemnitz Nature Conservation Station (Environmental Agency). The aim is to preserve semi-open biotopes and suppress succession.
Open and semi-open landscapes as well as sparse meadows interspersed with copses offer rare and endangered animal species valuable retreats and habitats. With the abandonment of military use after reunification, these habitats had to be preserved and protected. Parts of the former parade ground were placed under protection as a natural monument back in 1993.
