Exchange of paper driving licences

Additional openings on 4 November and 2 December, both from 1 to 5 pm

On Mondays, 4 November and 2 December, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the driving licence authority will be offering additional opening hours for the exchange of old paper driving licences for temporary EU driving licences due to high demand. Appointments for these additional times can be made immediately by dialling 115.

The offer is primarily aimed at all Chemnitz residents who still have a paper driving licence. The obligation to exchange the old paper driving licence currently applies to all those born from 1971 onwards and whose driving licence was issued before 1 January 1999. They must have exchanged their paper driving licence for a temporary EU card driving licence by 19 January 2025.

Driving licences issued between 1 January 1999 and 31 December 2001 must be exchanged by 19 January 2026. Holders of card driving licences already have the opportunity to have their driving licence exchanged for a temporary EU card driving licence.

It is also possible to send an email to fuehrerscheinumtausch(at)stadt-chemnitz.de. In addition to the request, the surname, first name, maiden name, date of birth, driving licence number and issuing authority should be stated. A confirmation with the exact appointment time and the respective appointment number will then be sent back by e-mail.

Background

As a result of the transposition of EU law into national law, all driving licences issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged for an EU driving licence by 19 January 2033. Due to the large number of driving licences to be exchanged, the exchange of driving licences will be staggered.
