Events organised by the Municipal Music School in September

Thursday, 4 September, 3 pm

Da Capo music café - "Dr Peter Seifert, retired mayor"

Venue: Kraftwerk e.V., Kaßbergstraße 36, 09112 Chemnitz
Admission: 7 euros incl. coffee and cake

In the September edition, the Musikcafé welcomes former Lord Mayor Dr Peter Seifert (1993-2006). In conversation with Nancy Gibson, Director of the Municipal Music School, he will talk about his life and his time in office. Born in Zwickau, he graduated with a doctorate in engineering in 1974 and joined the SPD in 1989. After several re-elections as Lord Mayor, he retired in 2006. He has received numerous honours for his services, including the Saxon Constitutional Medal.

Music school teacher Emi Suzuki (piano) and her pupils will provide the musical framework for the event.

Final concert of the exchange project with musical guests from Oulu, Finland

Venue: BSZ für Technik I, Industrieschule Chemnitz, Aulasaal, Park der Opfer des Faschismus 1, 09111 Chemnitz

Making music together will bring young orchestras and two cultural capitals together in September 2025: The guitar orchestra of the Chemnitz Municipal Music School and the guitar ensemble of the Oulu Conservatory, the Finnish European Capital of Culture 2026 for COOGIE - Chemnitz - Osijek - Guitar - International - Exchange.

Under the direction of Ollipekka Määttä, music school teacher and guitarist, the young musicians will experience intensive cultural exchange during their rehearsals for the joint final concert on 6 September at 6 pm at the Chemnitz Industrial School.

At the centre of the concert is the world premiere of the work "Winds" by Janko Rašeta, born in Osijek, Croatia. The piece is a commission dedicated to this year's Capital of Culture year. Finnish folk songs, the "Concertino 3" by Pieter van der Staak and other pieces will also be presented.

A return visit to Oulu is planned for 2026, when Oulu will be celebrated as European Capital of Culture.

Family concert "KUNTERBUNT"

Charity concert with pupils from the municipal music school

Venue: Church of the rehabilitation centre, Flemmingstraße 8, 09116 Chemnitz
Admission: free, a donation is requested

Pupils from the Municipal Music School cordially invite you to the "KUNTERBUNT" family concert on 26 September! The young musicians will present a varied programme that reflects the diversity of music education in various subject areas.


Saturday, 27 September, 5 pm

Final concert of the 29th Werner Richter Competition for Accordion and Bandoneon

Venue: Concert hall - Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstr. 1
Admission: free

In the final concert of the 29th "Werner Richter" accordion competition, Saxon accordion and bandoneon players will show off their skills in the concert hall of the Municipal Music School.

The purpose of the "Werner Richter" competition is to encourage interested amateur musicians of different ages in their musical development. It is intended to give them the opportunity to prepare for other competitions, gain audition experience and exchange ideas with like-minded people.

Kaleidoscope concert - Against forgetting

Venue: Concert hall - Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstr. 1
Admission: 10 euros, concessions 5 euros, tickets available on the day

The Chemnitz Music Society and the Chemnitz Municipal Music School cordially invite you to a special kaleidoscope concert dedicated to the memory of Justin Sonder, an honorary citizen of Chemnitz. He is a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and would have been 100 years old this year. He died in his hometown in 2020.

Sonder's eventful life will be honoured through a combination of music and readings. In addition to excerpts from his biography "I want to live", Sonder's favourite works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Paul Senneville/Olivier Toussaint, Alice Samter and John Williams will be performed.

Concert with Ukrainian pupils from the Municipal Music School

Venue: Concert hall - Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstr. 1
Admission: free

As part of the Intercultural Weeks, Ukrainian pupils from the Municipal Music School invite you to a special concert. There will be a colourful programme ranging from traditional Ukrainian music to international sounds from rock, pop and jazz. A wonderful opportunity for an exchange of cultures.
