Werner Richter Accordion Competition
Venue: Concert hall, Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstraße 1
The competition starts at 10 am. The ceremonial concert with awarding of prizes and certificates takes place at 5.30 pm. The event is open to the public. Free admission for the audience.
The Werner Richter Accordion Competition will be held for the first time on 1 October in Chemnitz, Werner Richter's home town, at the Chemnitz Municipal Music School.
The competition celebrated its 25th anniversary in Dresden in 2021. Bärbel Claus, Chairwoman of the State Association of the German Accordion Teachers' Association, together with Werner Richter's widow, Thea Richter, and many supporters, has motivated and inspired many young musicians with the competition over the past 25 years.
Werner Richter was one of the founding teachers of the Chemnitz music school in 1950 and headed the accordion department for decades until his retirement. He was a pillar of music school life that many of our current teachers still remember well. He was admired and loved by colleagues and pupils alike. He could be relied upon to write suitable, inspired and often amusing works for his students and ensembles, whether beginners or advanced.
The bandoneon was originally developed as the "Chemnitz Concertina" by Carl Friedrich Uhlig in the 1830s. For this reason, the new category bandoneon solo was introduced for the competition in Chemnitz.

Friday, 14 October to Sunday, 16 October
Klangbrücken project - final concert on 16 October, 4 p.m.
Venue: Concert hall - Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstraße 1
The event is free of charge.
With the Klangbrücken project from 14 to 16 October, the Chemnitz Municipal Music School, the Chemnitz Music Association and the Local Action Plan for Democracy, Tolerance and a Cosmopolitan Chemnitz (LAP) would like to organise a weekend in which many children and young people will be involved both musically and in terms of gestures and lyrics. Together with musicians and educators from other cultures, we will explore their music, accompanied by texts and songs from the respective country. The work will culminate in a concert on Sunday afternoon, 16 October at 4 pm, to which everyone is cordially invited. To round off the whole experience, there will also be culinary delights for the participants during the workshop, i.e. food from other, foreign cuisines.
The aim of this joint project is to promote contact with other cultures and mutual understanding. (A video documentation will be produced.)

"Brundibár" - Premiere

"Brundibár" - 2nd performance

"Brundibár" is more than just an enchanting story about childlike courage and community spirit. Composed in 1938, the children's opera could initially only be performed in secret in a Jewish children's home in Prague. After his deportation to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, the composer Hans Krása rehearsed it with the imprisoned children of the camp. Brundibár was performed there for the first time in September 1943 and 54 further performances followed.
Siblings Aninka and Pepíček go to the market to fetch milk for their sick mother. As they have no money, they want to do the same as the organ grinder Brundibár, who people throw coins into his hat for his music. They sing their favourite song, but nobody listens to them. Only when the cat, dog and sparrow help them round up all the children in the town is their song strong enough and soon Pepíček's hat is full of money.
Brundibár snatches it from the boy and tries to run away with it. But he has no chance against the crowd of children. They celebrate their triumph and their friendship.
"Brundibár" is a co-production between Chemnitz Theatre and the Chemnitz Municipal Music School.
