In 1973, he took up a position as administrative director at the Berliner Ensemble and in 1987 became deputy artistic director for economics, planning and technology at the Deutsche Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Five years later, Stiska was appointed General Director of the Chemnitz Municipal Theatre and, following the transformation of the municipal theatre into a limited company, he was its General Director and sole Managing Director until 2006. Stiska was also Chairman of the Saxony State Association of the German Theatre Association for more than ten years. At the age of 75, Rolf Stiska ended his active working life as head of the theatre, opera and orchestra company in Halle at the end of the current season. In the Musikcafé, he chats with Nancy Gibson about his own experiences, the state of the German municipal theatre system, its threats and its potential. Daniel Scherzer, a particularly talented young pianist from the Municipal Music School, will provide the musical accompaniment.
