Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev
Venue: Concert hall, Chemnitz Municipal Music School, Gerichtsstraße 1
Admission: 6 euros
An event organised by the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra Chemnitz
The most requested and probably most popular concert for children, "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev, is once again on the programme of the Robert Schumann Philharmonic Orchestra.
Born in 1891, Sergei Prokofiev created a musical fairy tale in his 1936 work "Peter and the Wolf", which is highly exciting and thrilling and at the same time conveys a great deal of knowledge about orchestral instruments and their tonal language almost unnoticed.
"There was a lively demand for children's pieces at the time, and this prompted me to compose a symphonic tale for children, 'Peter and the Wolf' (op. 67), for which I wrote the text myself. Each character in the story was given his own motif, which was always played by the same instrument. ... The text was read aloud when the music paused; it was very short, because for me it was only a means of getting the children to listen to the music." Sergei Prokofiev from Sergei Prokofiev, From My Life, Zurich/St. Gallen 1993
Before the actual concert begins, all the instruments and their familiar motifs are introduced and familiarised. But in most cases, the children already know all about them and happily announce which character or instrument is involved.
Pupils from Chemnitz Municipal Music School have been playing at the "Viva la musica" concert in the opera house for many years. And vice versa, artists from Chemnitz Theatre have repeatedly had the opportunity to use the music school's auditorium. In addition to "Peter and the Wolf", Janosch's "Josa with the Magic Fiddle" in the version for narrator, violin, percussion and piano by Wilfried Hiller and the portrait concert of Krzysztof Penderecki will be performed this season.
