80 years ago, on 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy and opened a second front against Hitler. They were followed shortly afterwards by units of the US Army for "psychological warfare". Their task: to investigate, unsettle and demoralise the enemy and persuade them to surrender without a fight. As graduates of special training programmes at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, they were known as the "Ritchie Boys". The companies consisted mainly of young Germans who had found a new home in America after fleeing the Nazis. Among them were quite a few German Jews like Stefan Heym.
