90 years ago this spring, he was actually due to graduate from Chemnitz state grammar school. But a few months earlier, the young Stefan Heym had been forced to leave school and the city involuntarily because National Socialists and right-wing bourgeois circles publicly mobilised against the 18-year-old. A poem he had written against the deployment of German military advisors abroad had caused a veritable shitstorm for the young poet. Its consequences were to have a decisive influence on the course of his future life.
