Television from next door. Images of upheaval in local television (1990 to 1995).

Presentations and discussions

Venue: TIETZ, Central Library, Event Hall

Admission: free

In Chemnitz, street surveys give a realistic picture of the situation; Rio Reiser sings about "Knockout Germany". In the Erzgebirge, the "Karl-Marx-Straße" can only be renamed "Kaiserstraße" at the second attempt in the local council. A West German "investor" calls the residents "original inhabitants" who have to make a decision. In Leipzig, the round table rejects Coca-Cola's sponsorship of a rock event. In Görlitz, a young city councillor Michael Kretzschmer botches a "waiter competition"; a large renovation cheque for the old town is handed over. In Laubusch in Lusatia, a priest reports on the arrival of the first expatriate Germans from Ukraine.

The programmes of local television broadcasters in Saxony contain moving and moving close-up images of the unification process, continuities and breaks in tradition and socialisation, euphoria and (all too quickly) disappointed hopes. Images that cannot be found in any public television archive.

Leipzig media scientists Judith Kretzschmar and Rüdiger Steinmetz have compiled a cross-section of local Saxon TV programmes; they classify and listen.

Two of the most important chroniclers of the late GDR experienced these legendary rock pilgrimages at first hand. The photographer and later co-founder of the Ostkreuz photo agency Harald Hauswald captured the enthusiastic audience in atmospherically dense images and photographed the musicians from a proximity that would be almost unthinkable today. His pictures are complemented by contemporary reports and a current essay by the award-winning publicist and "Zeit" journalist Christoph Dieckmann, who reports on the political background and vividly tells of the power of freedom in rock'n'roll.
