Exhibition: 14-18 WAR WAS | Bildwandel with informative vernissage
Corresponding to the period of the First World War from 1 August 1914 to 11 November 1918, the Schlossberg Museum, in cooperation with the Department of Romance Cultural Studies at Chemnitz University of Technology, will be showing a photograph from its collection of historical images relating to the events of the war every month until November 2018 as part of the "14-18 WAR WAS" project.

Here I am a child, here I can be one - playful learning in a reform school.
Introductory lecture & exhibition opening
The question of the right way to deal with pupils and the right teaching method is as old as school itself and more topical today than ever. Just 100 years ago, obedience, diligence, order and cleanliness were the most important teaching objectives. Teachers were regarded as untouchable figures of respect in the classroom who used the rod or cane if pupils disobeyed. At the beginning of the 20th century, reform pedagogy gave rise to educational concepts that favoured child-oriented, practical and non-violent teaching methods. Karl Prelle (1895 - 1975) was a representative of the basic idea of reform pedagogy. The teacher from Lower Saxony was dedicated to education and upbringing and designed his lessons to be true to life; his pupils should enjoy school and have fun learning. To this end, he taught in small groups, developed a series of educational games and reorganised the classrooms with his pupils to create an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Reading with Reiner Lehberger: Loki Schmidt - wife of the Federal Chancellor and educator
Even as the wife of former German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, Loki Schmidt remained a committed educator, and Reiner Lehberger presents her unusual teacher biography in a reading. Lehberger, who knew the teacher personally, uses passages from his book about Loki Schmidt
book about Loki Schmidt as well as photos and stories to give an insight into her life.
The reading, followed by a discussion, marks the start of the lecture series "Education - Bildung - Biografie", which is jointly organised by the Chair of Primary School Education at the Centre for Teacher Training at Chemnitz University of Technology, the University Library and Chemnitz City Library.

The city library reads picture books for refugee children aged 4 to 10 and introduces the library.

Read aloud: On quiet soles... Stories to listen to
read aloud for everyone with keen ears
When you are invited to the event "Auf leisen Sohlen..." in the city library, you have to be very quiet and prick up your ears, because the reading mentors come to visit and read out exciting stories. They take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. The literature-loving readers read the latest children's books, classics, "bestsellers" from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves.
