Special exhibition "Under the spell of plants - the dose makes the poison"
from 26 August to 19 November 2017
"Under the Spell of Plants - The Dose Makes the Poison" is a collection-based special exhibition that was created in-house. The herbarium of Chemnitz pharmacist Dr Oskar Herbert Hornauer served as the basis for the idea. He was obliged to compile a herbarium during his pharmacy studies so that he could also recognise in nature what he processed into powders, tinctures and ointments in his pharmacy. These included poisonous plants, but as the scholar Paracelsus knew, it's all a question of the dose.

But did you know that it is also used in medicine to treat rheumatism or pericarditis? It's all just a question of the dose. Even today's pharmacists still utilise the effects of plant substances. Take a journey through our local gardens and be fascinated by the two faces of plants.

The "Window into the Earth's History" at Glockenstraße 16 opens its doors on Geotope Day. Find out what treasure lies beneath Chemnitz. Young explorers can go in search of fossil treasures and get to know the tools of a palaeontologist. The Friends of the Museum e. V. will provide refreshments.

Whether hemlock, belladonna or henbane, many poisonous plants are preceded by their reputation for murder and death. But as Paracelsus once said, the dose alone determines the curse or blessing of many a poisonous plant. On a guided tour through the plant departments of the Botanical Garden, you can familiarise yourself with some of these plant species and pick up an anecdote or two from the rich treasure trove of poisonous plant literature.
