Interactive exhibition: Museum experience
A forest that stretches back 291 million years into the Earth's history and a permanent exhibition that has been standing for 20 years - time to change something in our museum! We want to retell the stories about the life and death of our fossilised tree giants and bring much more from the collections to light. In recent years, children and young people have been thinking about what our museum should offer in the future. Using games, animated films and audio contributions they developed themselves, they brought primordial dinosaurs, scorpions and giant dragonflies to life for the experience level of the new permanent exhibition. The resulting interactive stations were tested by young and old alike. We have implemented these change requests and now you can once again discover, play and dream.
Admission: Visiting the interactive exhibition: Erlebnisraum Museum is free of charge. (A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent exhibition).

Photo competition: The apple tree through the seasons
Admission: adults 4 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to 18 years free of charge
Delicate white blossoms in spring, juicy red apples in summer, colourful leaves in autumn and icy branches in winter - the apple tree is a constant companion in our lives. We would like to dedicate an exhibition to this changeable creature of our gardens. Nature enthusiasts have submitted photographs of the seasonal "faces" of the apple tree over the course of a year. The Museum für Naturkunde is now presenting the winning images from the photo competition "The apple through the seasons" until 30 October in a special exhibition and also digitally.

Ukraine - Hope 2
Special exhibition in cooperation with the cultural art association "beseder" e. V.
Admission: adults 4 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to the age of 18 free of charge
The double exhibition is dedicated to the fate of Ukraine with drawings from the perspectives of professional artists and emotionally moved children.
The exhibition is being organised as part of the Intercultural Weeks in Chemnitz.

Trick or treat - "Halloween party at the Window into Earth's History"

Shorter days, longer nights, cobwebs everywhere and fog in the fields - the eerily beautiful autumn season has arrived and the excavation season at the "Window into Earth History" is coming to an end. But before it does, we want to open our doors to Chemnitz's underground for everyone. There is a lot to experience: Scary stories and face painting for children, a search for fossils and gruesome tales from a bygone world in the Permian period. All brave visitors can also fortify themselves with a cup of volcanic magic potion and delicious pumpkin soup. Just come along and get spooky with us by torchlight and hear what Halloween stories the town on the volcano has to tell.

We will explore the millions of years old tree resin together and investigate the questions: How is amber formed? Where does it get its name from? Why are insects so often trapped in it? As a creative activity, we will polish amber, which you can then take home with you.
"Window into the history of the earth"

There's a lot going on during a volcanic eruption. Rocks fly through the air and ash darkens the sky. This natural spectacle also produces tuff, fossilised ash. This can even be turned into works of art. We want to try this out together with a hammer and chisel. You can then take your own work of art home with you.

Whether in the newspaper or on the evening television programme - unsolved criminal cases or "cold cases" arouse our curiosity and fire our imagination. But nature can also leave behind such open cases, which have been hidden in the rocks beneath our feet for millions of years in the form of fossils. The lecture takes the audience on a criminological journey to selected crime scenes from the Earth's history, which have been investigated in various research projects at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz. Together we collect the evidence, identify the victims and reconstruct their lives and deaths millions of years ago. Astonishing findings await us and take us to the shores of tropical lakes, into the micro-worlds of fossilised bacteria and fungi and to the bottom of long-gone seas.

Discovering fruit culture

The #Sachsens_ObstKULTUR_entdecken fruit discovery days will take place at the Museum für Naturkunde from 28 to 30 October. These will be organised with the support of the Pomologen-Verein e. V.. In addition to the identification of local fruit varieties and the documentation of particularly old varieties, the members of the Pomologen-Verein e. V. will provide an educational programme for children and young people. These include creative activities with natural materials relating to apples, apple pressing and tastings. In addition to imparting knowledge, the programme of events focuses on playfully raising awareness of the cultural treasure that is the "fruit tree" in urban areas.
The measure is co-financed by taxpayers' money on the basis of the Catching up after Corona action programme for children and young people.
