The theme of this year's Chemnitz Museum Night on 14 May 2022 will be "The Unseen - das Ungesehene". It will showcase collections, working methods and information that are less well-known or not in the spotlight. For the Museum für Naturkunde, the focus will be on providing an insight into the species-rich, evolutionarily pioneering and palaeontologically significant Chemnitz fossil deposit.
From 6 pm to 1 am, the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz (Moritzstraße 20) will be offering family-friendly activities for nature-loving night owls. These include a rally to explore the fantastic world of collecting, an intervention exhibition entitled "The World of Colours" where visitors can get to the bottom of their own emotional state in the midst of prehistoric trees, and a "Museum Experience" where they can experiment, listen and play. It's about nothing less than a shark nursery in Chemnitz from 300 million years ago or the Chemnitz primeval dinosaurs from the Permian forest, which grew in our region 291 million years ago. On this evening, museum staff will be on hand to answer visitors' questions in the exhibition.
Colourful scratch pictures, a set for making beeswax candles and the Museum Stories dice game can also be purchased at the museum ticket desk.
Anyone who would like to try out the dice game with oversized dice outdoors is cordially invited to the "Window into Earth History" (Glockenstraße 16). On this evening, volunteers from the Friends of the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz e. V. and employees of the museum will provide insights into the excavations from 6 pm to 10 pm. Guests will learn first-hand what characterises the Chemnitz fossil deposit and how the fossil finds are prepared so that they can later find their way into research and the museum. In the geological classroom, young palaeontologists can try out what a geoscientific excavation feels like and, with a lot of patience, even dig something up.
The permanent exhibition and the excavation site of the Museum für Naturkunde are barrier-free. The special exhibition "Erlebnisraum Museum" and the digital museum guide offer texts in easy-to-understand language. The information boards in the Museum of Natural History are available in German and English. In the Insectarium, exhibition guides are also available in Arabic, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Czech. The information boards at the "Window into the Earth's History" are available in German, English and Czech.

Interactive exhibition: Museum experience
A forest that stretches back 291 million years into the history of the earth and a permanent exhibition that has been standing for 20 years - time to change something in our museum! We want to retell the stories about the life and death of our fossilised tree giants and bring much more from the collections to light. In recent years, children and young people have been thinking about what our museum should offer in the future. Using games, animated films and audio contributions they developed themselves, they brought primordial dinosaurs, scorpions and giant dragonflies to life for the experience level of the new permanent exhibition. The resulting interactive stations were tested by young and old alike. We have taken these change requests on board and now it's time to discover, play and dream again.
Visiting the interactive exhibition: Erlebnisraum Museum is free of charge. A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent exhibition and the special exhibition "Highlights of Nature Photography".

Special exhibition: Expressive Painting - The World of Colour
Admission: Adults 4 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to 18 years free of charge
Euphoria, confidence, fear, happiness, loneliness - one's own feelings often follow a rollercoaster in life. Young people from the TERRA NOVA CAMPUS discovery school who love to paint expressed their feelings beyond language as part of the "Expressive Painting - The World of Colour" project. Their inner world is reflected in spontaneous paintings created in the atmosphere of the Petrified Forest. The Museum of Natural History is showing these special works in the existing permanent exhibition.
