Events of the Chemnitz Museum of Natural History in June 2022

"A penchant for culture"

All curious visitors are cordially invited to join us on a journey of discovery and be transported back 291 million years into the past. At that time, our region was close to the equator and a primeval forest dominated the landscape. Find out who lived in this primeval forest and how we know all this at the "Window into the Earth's History". Let yourself be guided through the excavation site by a quiz and learn exciting stories from Chemnitz's prehistoric past. If you feel like it, you can then dig for a 291-million-year-old treasure yourself in the "geological classroom". You can also let your imagination run wild with the help of giant cubes and make up your own excavation stories.
The "Window into the Earth's History" project is subsidised by the ESF. The event is subsidised by the European Social Fund (ESF).
*Based on the ESF guidelines, it is necessary to record the residential address of the visitors - but NOT the name.

Writing workshop

In the writing workshop, texts will be written about an exhibit at the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz. You can decide which exhibit you are particularly interested in and then let your imagination run wild to come up with an exciting story. Over the two days, you will learn how to realise ideas linguistically, create suspense and write coherent texts. At the end, there will be a public reading in the museum where you will be allowed to present your stories. Three selected texts will also be published in the museum's digital guide as a read-in audio file or in text form.
The writing workshop is a micro-project funded by the city as part of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, which is being realised in cooperation with the Museum für Naturkunde Chemnitz. A prerequisite for participation in the event is both photo permission from the participants and release of the texts for publication (rights remain with the authors).

Interactive exhibition: Museum experience

Admission: Visiting the interactive exhibition: Erlebnisraum Museum is free of charge.
(A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent exhibition and the special exhibition "Highlights of Nature Photography").
A forest that stretches back 291 million years into the history of the earth and a permanent exhibition that has been standing for 20 years - time to change something in our museum! We want to retell the stories about the life and death of our fossilised tree giants and bring much more from the collections to light. In recent years, children and young people have been thinking about what our museum should offer in the future. Using games, animated films and audio contributions they developed themselves, they brought prehistoric dinosaurs, scorpions and giant dragonflies to life for the experience level of the new permanent exhibition. The resulting interactive stations were tested by young and old alike. We have taken these requests for changes on board and now it's time to discover, play and dream again.

Special exhibition: Expressive painting - The world of colours

Admission: Adults 4 euros, concessions 2.50 euros, children and young people up to 18 years free of charge
Euphoria, confidence, fear, happiness, loneliness - one's own feelings often follow a rollercoaster in life. As part of the "Expressive Painting - The World of Colour" project, young people from the TERRA NOVA CAMPUS discovery school have expressed their feelings beyond language. Their inner world is reflected in spontaneous paintings created in the atmosphere of the Petrified Forest. The Museum of Natural History is showing these special works in the existing permanent exhibition.
