Opening of the 7th Chemnitz Literature Days LESELUST
Literary Chemnitz
Reading with Kerstin Hensel, Jens Sparschuh and Hans Brinkmann
Kerstin Hensel, Jens Sparschuh and Hans Brinkmann will be reading from their current
books and are in dialogue with literary critic Michael Hametner. Together they will explore the question of what influence our city and region have had on their own literary work. The reading will be accompanied by music from the young Chemnitz singer-songwriter Frida Lou.

LESELUST: Michael Lüders, Amina's Restaurant. A modern fairy tale
Moroccan Sid Mohammed Boucetta has a dream: having learnt German with the help of books by African traveller Gerhard Rohlfs, he wants to open a restaurant in his home town of Bremen together with his wife Amina and his daughter. With skill and the help of student Alexander, who has fallen in love with Jasmina, Sid Mohammed succeeds in turning Amina's restaurant on the dyke into a wondrous place of encounter between Orient and Occident for a summer: While Amina cooks tempting dishes, Sid Mohammed tells stories of love and suffering, cruelty and happiness in the tradition of oriental storytellers. As in every fairy tale, however, evil lies in wait, but the guests at Amina's restaurant have learnt something new ...

Corresponding to the period of the First World War from 1914 to 1918, the Schlossbergmuseum Chemnitz is showing another photograph from its collection of historical images of the war, accompanied by the ENT_Rüstet team.

LESELUST: Chemnitz reads Heym
On 10 April, Heym will be read in over 30 public places and unusual locations in Chemnitz - including on the market, in the Citybahn, in the IKK service centre, in libraries, bookshops, in the New Synagogue and in the theatre - texts by Stefan Heym will be read by Chemnitz residents of all ages, schoolchildren, students, artists and celebrities.
With this public reading spectacle, the International Stefan Heym Society and the City Library, together with many Chemnitz partners, would like to commemorate the world-class writer and honorary citizen of our city on the occasion of Stefan Heym's 105th birthday. The readings are intended to arouse the interest of Chemnitz residents and encourage them to engage with Heym's multifaceted work.

LESELUST: Willy Nachdenklich, Thoughtful sayings with pictures
A witty cabaret evening in the Vong language.
Willy Nachdenklich is the creator of the Facebook page "Nachdenkliche Sprüche mit Bilder" with over 360,000 followers. He has achieved cult status as an internet star. He has popularised the vocabulary and made it more or less socially acceptable. Incidentally, the term "I bims", which he popularised, was named Youth Word of the Year in 2017.
Now Willy's entertaining words of wisdom are also available in book form. In the form of witty and imaginative short stories, Willy Nachdenklich will reflect on the banalities of everyday life in the brash youth or Vong language for which his fans love him so much.

LESELUST: The Cultivated Wolf, puppet theatre by Marie Bretschneider
One morning, a little wolf crawls out of his cave and takes the bus to Entenwitz without a ticket. There he strolls onto a farm to satisfy his appetite. But the animals are not trembling with fear, they are reading. The duck tells him: "You are a primitive beast and will end up in the cooking pot." A wolf at school, how is that supposed to work?

LESELUST: Andrea Sawatzki, you are of course invited
After two bestsellers about the Bundschuh family, Andrea Sawatzki's new novel about her long-suffering heroine Gundula follows: her eldest has fallen in love and unexpectedly announces a wedding. But nobody knows his future wife. Only one thing is clear: the celebration will take place in his parents' garden, who endeavour to be calm and open-minded. But they are actually shocked because their daughter-in-law is African-American, goes by the name of Candy and comes from Detroit. Gerald, who claims to be fluent in English, will be particularly challenged. A tragic mistake that is not the last one his wife Gundula makes: the small circle of guests quickly becomes a larger one, including the daughter-in-law's unexpected fellow travellers.

LESELUST: And then and then a white elephant - a Rilke evening
Rainer Maria Rilke is considered one of the most important representatives of literary modernism.
His texts are the result of the finest observations and reflect moments of life with impressionistic and symbolistic forms. Rilke tells stories in both poetry and prose, sometimes colourful and lively, sometimes tired and melancholy - but always full of depth.
The Rilke evening approaches the literary work in two ways: With the art of speech

LESELUST: Thomas Billhardt, My adventures with the camera
Thomas Billhardt, born in Chemnitz in 1937, has portrayed people on four continents in their life situations. He became famous in the 1960s with his observations on Berlin's Alexanderplatz. His photos from the Vietnam War and his photographs of children from all over the world attracted international attention. He was an exceptional photographer with exceptional privileges in the GDR and was passionately committed to the children's aid organisation UNICEF.
In this book, Billhardt, a man of images, appears as a narrator of episodes and anecdotes. Self-confident and self-deprecating, he reports on his successes, emotions and mistakes. At the same time, he does not ignore his private life. In this way, he portrays himself in a surprising way.

LESELUST: Literary quintet
Literature brought into dialogue for readers and those who want to become readers!
Chemnitz is celebrating its birthday and the Literary Quintet is joining in the celebrations - an extra edition of this popular event will be dedicated entirely to authors from Chemnitz. Professors and students will discuss works by Werner Bräunig, Peter Härtling, Peter Hermlin, Angela Krauß and Irmtraud Morgner. A celebrity surprise guest also awaits you on the debating couch.
The Literary Quintet is a joint event organised by the Chair of Modern German and Comparative Literature, the Chemnitz University Library and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Student Council.

LESELUST: Regina Scheer, Machandel
In her impressive debut novel, Regina Scheer spans the period from the 1930s to the Second World War, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the present day. She tells of the beginnings of the GDR, when left-wing forces weakened by fascism and Stalinism wanted to create a better Germany, of numbness and disappointment, of the hopeful awakening at the end of the 1980s and of shattered dreams.

LESELUST: Pick a poem - pick a story
To mark World Book Day, members of the 1st Chemnitzer Autoren Verein e.V. (Chemnitz Authors' Association) are making self-written love poems, sayings and short stories available for this event for the16th time. Hanging on a washing line, the texts await their readers. Picking and taking home is expressly permitted.

LESELUST: Patricia Holland Moritz, Mordzeitlose
Margrit Kunkel grows up in a nursery in Brandenburg and her studies take her to the botanical gardens of the world. She was soon recognised as an expert and took over the management of the Holland Garden Academy in Berlin. Her model of "slow gardening" also seems to bring harmony to her staff. However, this is abruptly disrupted when Margrit comes across a human hand in the cactus house. If it weren't for the unexplained circumstances of her mother's death, the strange disappearance of Margrit's first boyfriend and an investigator who makes disturbing connections, she would have reported the discovery to the police. But she prefers to take matters into her own hands.
Patricia Holland Moritz was born in what is now Chemnitz, worked as a bookseller in Leipzig, left the GDR to work as a haulage clerk in Paris, studied North American Studies in Berlin, became a booker for bands and now works in a publishing house. She is a blogger and ghostwriter.

LESELUST: Christian Jakob,
Dictators as gatekeepers of Europe. How the EU is shifting its borders to Africa.
Europe is once again drawing its borders through Africa. Migration control has become an issue of the utmost domestic political importance in the EU. It is therefore working flat out to expand its relations with governments on the African continent. The aim is to prevent their citizens from travelling to Europe. The EU is offering billions in military and economic aid in return. It cooperates with regimes that commit serious human rights violations and trains their police and armies. Freedom of movement in Africa is being restricted, development aid is being redirected and made conditional: those who stop migrants receive money in return.
The book, which was published in autumn 2017, is the first comprehensive account of the new European Africa policy and will be presented by the author on this evening.
This event is a cooperation between the educational organisation "weiterdenken" at the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

LESELUST: Leonard Cohen - A Canadian Poet
Lecture in English with Einde O'Callaghan
One of the best-known Canadian singer-songwriters is undoubtedly Leonard Cohen, who sadly passed away in 2016. As early as the 1950s, he was described as a cult poet of the younger generation and after turning to music in the mid-1960s, he was considered one of the greatest songwriters of our time alongside Bob Dylan.
In his lecture, English lecturer Einde O'Callaghan from Chemnitz introduces the artist and some of his songs and also discusses the lyrics.

LESELUST: Stefan Schwarz, Let's rather have tomorrow!
Undaunted and with humorous precision, Stefan Schwarz reports on the frightening lives of not-so-young men. His wife is suddenly delighted to be chatted up by a childhood friend, an actually loyal mate brags about a conquest, a colleague clatters for attention in overly high heels. What's going on in midlife? In his new book, the author explains, among other things, why he finds mature women more amorous than young beauties. There are also questions such as: Who gets more out of spontaneous stand-up sex? The sweetheart or the disc surgeons?
Stefan Schwarz writes novels, short stories, screenplays and shopping lists. He knows all about tricky love and life situations and turns them into great entertainment. Clever, funny, linguistically elegant. If there is any truth at all about couples and families, it can be found here. His fans read the stories to each other, so thrilled are they that someone seems to be telling them about their everyday lives.

Our reading mentors take both young and older listeners into colourful fantasy worlds with great pleasure. They read the latest children's books, classics, bestsellers from their own childhood or even texts they have written themselves in the atmospheric reading tent in the children's world.
