4 September, 5 to 6.30 p.m. - Syodou - Japanese calligraphy

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ

Japanese calligraphy, "Shodou", is the art of "beautiful writing" with a writing brush. "Shodou was adopted from Chinese calligraphy around the 6th to 7th century. The characters were initially created for practical use. As the culture developed, so did the method of expressing characters aesthetically. Sho" means embellishment of the characters and "dou" means teaching. While the foundations of this art lie in the standard aesthetic theory of representation and thus in learning the characters, Japanese calligraphy can also embellish life in a practical way, enrich the mind with this hobby and express individual beauty. The learning process trains the personality and refines the feeling.

In three city walks we will explore the city centre, Sonnenberg, Schloßchemnitz and Kaßberg, each with a stop in the respective neighbourhood and enough time for joint discussion. The aim is to understand the city and discuss possible ideas for future urban development - also as a contribution to Chemnitz's bid to become the Capital of Culture 2025.

The event is free of charge.

11 September, 6.45 to 8.15 p.m. - Information event: Becoming a Dementia Partner

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in the TIETZ

The "DementiaPartner" initiative is the German version of the international "Dementia friends" movement. It aims to give citizens confidence in dealing with people suffering from dementia, promote acceptance of people with dementia in our society and pave the way for inclusion. In a compact basic course, participants are trained to approach those affected responsibly and with a sound knowledge of dementia and to offer them help. For example, if you see an obviously confused person in everyday life who needs help, a trained "DementiaPartner" can handle the situation with confidence. Thanks to their knowledge, they can help more effectively and act as a role model to encourage other people to also deal with this issue, which is becoming increasingly important in our ageing society.

This event provides an initial insight into the training and tasks of a "DementiaPartner".

12 September, 5.45 to 8.15 p.m. - Arguing well, convincing others

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ

If you want to convince others, you need good arguments. Several factors are necessary for this, which will be demonstrated in the course. Argumentation strategies will be presented and you will learn how to present your arguments credibly and objectively. You will also learn how to increase your repartee and the impact of your arguments through the targeted use of rhetorical figures and body language. You will hone your skills in dealing with argumentative situations.

14 September, 3.30 to 5 p.m. - Window into the history of the earth

Location: "Fenster in die Erdgeschichte", Glockenstraße 16, 09130 Chemnitz

Chemnitz is a special city because it was built on volcanic rock. This volcano erupted around 291 million years ago and buried a tropical oasis of ferns, horsetails and conifers under its ashes. All life came to a standstill, a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions and a stroke of luck at the same time, as the ash preserved plants and animals in situ. In this event, we will take you on a journey into the geological history of our region.

16 September, 5 to 7.30 p.m. - School-free learning - the alternative?

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in the TIETZ

In many countries, extracurricular learning is available alongside school education. In some cases this educational opportunity is similar to learning in school, in others autonomous learning or free learning is practised.

Rosenrot Mireille Schülpke, mother of free learners and head of the German and French-language programme at Clonlara School, a US public school that supports extracurricular learning, will talk about her experiences.

The evening will also focus on the current legal situation in Saxony and the practice of out-of-school learning.

This event is a co-operation between the Children's Rights Office Saxony and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

19 September, 9.30 to 10.15 a.m. - Children's book presentation: "A king rides a bus"

Location: TIETZ, ground floor/roundabout

Chemnitz author Effi Winkler has published a children's book. It tells short stories about how children can learn to treat older and disabled people with respect. Everyday situations are depicted in a playful and humorous way, inviting children to smile and reflect. At the event, the author will read from the book and day-care centre children will create little scenes to go with it. Children aged 4 and over, parents and day-care centre groups are particularly invited.

The event is being organised as part of the European Mobility Days.

20 September, 4 to 5.30 p.m. - "The dose alone makes the difference..."

Guided tour of medicinal plants in the botanical garden

Meeting point: Botanical Garden, entrance Leipziger Straße 147

Whether hemlock, belladonna or henbane, many poisonous plants have a reputation for murder and death. But as Paracelsus once said, the dose alone determines the curse or blessing of many a poisonous plant. On a guided tour through the plant departments of the Botanical Garden, you can familiarise yourself with some of these plant species and pick up an anecdote or two from the rich treasure trove of poisonous plant literature.

A co-operation with the Museum of Natural History and the Botanical Garden on the occasion of the exhibition "Under the Spell of Plants - The Dose Makes the Poison" at the Museum of Natural History.

Outlook: As part of the KulTour series of events, the Museum für Naturkunde is offering a guided tour of its exhibition "Under the Spell of Plants - The Dose Makes the Poison" on 19 October.

20 September, 7 to 8.30 p.m. - "When the terror began"

Early/wild protective custody and concentration camps in Chemnitz and the surrounding area in 1933/34

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in the TIETZ

In the months from March to the end of July 1933, all the decrees issued by the Nazi Reich government and the Gauleitung of Saxony to consolidate the power of the Nazis were implemented uncompromisingly in the city of Chemnitz. These included the boycott campaign against Jews on
1 April 1933, the introduction of the "Aryan Paragraph", the dissolution of the trade unions, the implementation of Göring's circular decree regarding protective custody and state concentration camps, the ban on the SPD and the law against the formation of new parties. To intimidate the population, the NSDAP organised four so-called "washing-up campaigns" in Chemnitz in March 1933 with the support of the SS, SA and auxiliary police. This was a unique action in Germany, which violated the dignity of public figures in a despicable manner. Anti-fascists were deported to prisons and police stations. Abuse, torture and murder took place, particularly in the Hansa-Haus and the Kaßberg prison.

On 2 May 1933, the first round-ups of anti-fascists from Chemnitz began, mostly members of the city council, communists, social democrats, trade unionists, Johova's Witnesses and others.
and others to the Sachsenburg concentration camp (near Frankenberg). The first camp roll call took place there on 2 June 1933 with 376 prisoners.

This event is a cooperation between the VVN-BdA Chemnitz and the civic initiative "Historischer Atlas Sachsen 1933 - 1945" and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

20 September, 7 to 9 p.m. - Living consciously: Modern mobility - car sharing in Chemnitz

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre in the TIETZ

Car sharing (car = car; to share = to share) focuses on sustainability: several people share one and the same car, thereby saving costs (e.g. for insurance, repairs) and optimising the utilisation of the car. The principle of car sharing will be presented on this evening. A representative of the largest provider in Central Germany, which now has 15 stations and many different vehicle classes in Chemnitz, will answer questions about the use, costs and advantages of this type of modern mobility.

24 September, 2 to 4.15 p.m. - Richard Hartmann and Johannes Schilling

Meeting point: Hartmannvilla, Kaßbergstraße 36

The tour guide Grit Linke invites you on a guided tour from the Hartmann Villa to the Schilling figures. The representative villa of the factory owner Richard Hartmann, Kaßbergstraße 36, was built in 1868 in classicist style with baroque details and remodelled in 1899. The spacious property with its surrounding garden used to overlook the Hartmann factory site. The tour ends at the Schilling figures, which are currently still wrapped up as they are still receiving a protective glaze after extensive cleaning. The ongoing restoration work and the history of the Four Times of Day sculpture group will be explained. The sculptures "The Morning", "The Noon", "The Evening" and "The Night" were originally created by Johannes Schilling (1826-1910) from 1868 for the Brühlsche Terrasse in Dresden. At the end of the 19th century, the sculptures were donated to the city of Chemnitz. After being displayed on Königsplatz (now Theatre Square) from 1918-28, they were relocated there in 1938 following the expansion of the palace pond grounds.

Note: Suitable for deaf people and people with hearing impairments. Sign language interpreters are present during the tour.

25 September, 5 to 8.15 p.m. - Cannabis as medicine - opportunities and problems

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ

It is a small revolution for Germany - the new law on the medical use of cannabis, which came into force in March 2017. Previously, medical cannabis was only available for seriously ill people with an exceptional licence from the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, which was "usually fought for in court". Patients had to bear the costs of the medicine themselves. Now, medical cannabis can be prescribed by doctors and the costs are to be covered by the health insurance funds. Many chronically seriously ill people are hoping that the new law will provide better help, as cannabis appears to be an effective medication for a whole range of symptoms. However, due to decades of prohibition, there has been little meaningful research on the subject, so the use of cannabis is controversial among medical practitioners, with much uncertainty and a lack of knowledge.

The lecture will familiarise you with the new law, point out the opportunities and problems it contains (e.g. fitness to drive), go into the background to its creation and describe its practical implementation to date (problems with doctors and application approval). You will also learn what cannabis does to the body and why it has a wide range of medical applications. The lecture is intended to counteract the widespread opinion that "weed is now available on prescription" and to encourage people to assert their rights as patients. Of course, there will also be room for questions and discussion.

The lecturer is a non-medical practitioner for psychotherapy and took part in the training course "Cannabis and cannabinoids in medicine" organised by the Hesse State Medical Association on 13 May 2017.

28 September, 6.45 to 9.15 p.m. - New perspectives for beekeeping and agriculture

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ

Bees depend on flowering landscapes to collect nectar and pollen and feed their colonies. However, our meadows and fields look like tidy designer fields where every flower and blossom is also a weed. What measures can agriculture and local authorities take to provide bees with sufficient food sources again? What can we change in our gardens and on our balconies to create blooming bee landscapes?

29 September, 5 to 7.30 p.m. - Get to know laughter yoga

Location: Chemnitz Adult Education Centre at TIETZ

Laughter yoga is a holistic method that releases endorphins like a "runner's high". It has been proven that laughter yoga reduces stress, helps prevent burnout, alleviates depression, stimulates the cardiovascular system, alleviates pain, boosts the immune system and cleanses and strengthens the respiratory tract. Laughing activates around 100 muscles. All internal organs are massaged. Laughter yoga is similar to aerobics. But the best thing is that you feel something like, yes ... Happiness!

You can join in at any time at your own level, no previous experience is required, just a willingness to laugh. You don't need to have a sense of humour or be in a particularly good mood.
