875 years of Chemnitz: Changing times - changing names
Location: TIETZ, event hall
On 10 May 2018, it will be 65 years since Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt by order of the state government at the time. The old name of the city, which had existed since the 13th century, was to disappear. The "founder of scientific socialism" was now to be the namesake. On 1 June 1990, thanks to the remarkable energy of a citizens' initiative and following a democratic voting process, the city was given back its original name.
Many questions still arise today: What did the ordered renaming mean for the identity of the city and its citizens? Are the renaming and renaming back symptomatic of the political spirit of the time? Did the order to rename the city in 1953 galvanise the will of the citizens to rename it back?
On this evening, we want to take another look at the events using extracts from the feature "Two names - one city" and by talking to contemporary witnesses from 1953 and 1990.
This event is a co-operation between the Mayor's Office of the City of Chemnitz and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

What happens in Ramadan? A look behind the scenes of the Muslim month of fasting

Admission: free
Once a year, Muslims celebrate the fasting month of Ramadan. In 2018, this will be between mid-May and mid-June. For non-Muslims, there is something mysterious about this time: How do you actually live Ramadan? What does fasting mean? Why do Muslims do it? What motivates them to do it? And what happens when they break their fast every evening after sunset?
The course will provide you with answers to these questions and an insight into a religious world that is lived in our midst, even here in Chemnitz.

3D printing - information evening with practical instruction
Venue. Workshop of the FabLab Chemnitz, Philippstraße 13, 09130 Chemnitz
3D printing is everywhere. Commerce, trade and private households - everyone can bring the technology into their business or private four walls. What is hype, what is reality? What are the current and future fields of application for 3D printing technologies? Which materials can be printed at home using which technology? What are the hurdles for users? How does printing actually work?
This course consists of a lecture and a live demonstration of 3D printing. The event is suitable for anyone who would like to get a taste of the subject.

The abstract watercolour - workshop
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.11
With lightness and swiftly applied colour partitions that suggest impressions, movements and moods, you will try your hand at the glazing, wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry technique. Using various aids such as wax, sponge and sieve, you can create your favourite motif - whether in realistic-looking depictions or in atmospheric, dissolving areas of colour and shapes.

(Re)find peace and inner balance at the pulse of nature

When was the last time you were in the forest and heard the rustling of the leaves, smelled the earthy scent and felt the majesty of the trees? Even if it's been a while since your last walk in the forest, do you still remember how good it felt?
When we are out and about in the forest mindfully, i.e. not with the everyday thought cinema in our heads, but try to be close to nature by observing and sensing it, then it does something to us ... Experience this for yourself through guided perception and mindfulness exercises in unspoilt nature. During the three-stage nature sojourns, you will be able to feel and activate your own life forces again. You will receive help for self-help in order to gradually come a little closer to your own inner balance in everyday life.
This outdoor course is particularly suitable for those who want to consciously take a break from "functioning".

"Unfortunately only these few lines", Georg and Rosemarie Sacke - letters and memories
Venue: TIETZ, event hall

In April 1934, Georg Sacke was sent to Sachsenburg concentration camp because of his commitment to a democratic society and against National Socialism, which transcended party and religious boundaries. He wrote the words "Unfortunately only these few lines" from there to his wife Rosemarie Sacke on 15 May 1935. The words are part of an intensive correspondence between the teacher and the Eastern European historian that has survived to this day. It bears witness to their commitment, their mutual concern for each other and their desire for freedom. Only a limited number of lines were left in the letters to express feelings, thoughts and wishes under the eyes of the SS.
The event is dedicated to the biography of Georg Sacke and the history of Sachsenburg concentration camp. It marks the start of the online project "Georg Sacke - Letters and Memories", in which the correspondence will be published at www.gedenkstaette-sachsenburg.de until November 2018, exactly 83 years later to the day.
This event is a cooperation between the Initiative Klick, the Lagerarbeitsgemeinschaft KZ Sachsenburg e.V. and the Chemnitz Adult Education Centre.

Chemnitz Doors: Workshop and city walk
Meeting point: Workshop, Rottluffer Straße 60
Anyone interested is invited to join us on an exciting walk across the Kaßberg and get to know another, certainly not so well-known piece of Chemnitz's architectural history: Experienced restorer and master cabinetmaker Sebastian Schulz will guide participants from door to door, literally, and explain interesting facts about their respective shapes, building history and construction. Beforehand, participants will receive a first-hand introduction to the construction of doors at the Sebastian Schulz joinery in Rottluffer Straße.

Fairytale course for adults

Fairy tales are wonderful companions, educators, pedagogues, language trainers, stimulators of the imagination, comforters and much more. For many people, fairy tales that they heard as a child are formative impressions in their lives. Fairy tales are not just stories, they are the wealth of human experience, the wisdom of the peoples. In fairy tales, all the issues that move people are discussed and dealt with, but they also lead to good.
Fairy tales should be told in a fairy tale course. We will discuss which type of fairy tale is suitable for which age of children and how a fantasy can be organised as a fairy tale (practical exercise).

Whisky seminar: The whisky island of Islay

The ultimate in flavours - malt whiskies for connoisseurs
The Hebridean island of Islay off the west coast of Scotland is something of a 'Mecca' for whisky connoisseurs; nowhere else is there said to be a more flavoursome whisky. One whisky from each of the now eight producing distilleries is presented.
There is still more activity there in terms of new distilleries opening - let's see how far along they are in April/May...
Attention: 8 drams!
The fee already includes the costs for samples, supplements and hand material. A tasting glass is not included in the fee, but can be purchased during the course. Experts may bring their own nosing glass (not a tumbler).

Landscape photography
Location: TIETZ, course room 4.62
In the first part of the course, after a brief explanation of general photographic contexts, the specifics of landscape photography will be discussed. This includes tips on the optimum equipment, discussion of preferred camera settings, tips on landscape photography and examples of images.
The second part is dedicated to practical application. The knowledge gained is put into practice under the theme of "Urban landscapes". The resulting images will then be discussed in the group.
Please bring your own: Digital camera (ideally a digital SLR camera), tripod (if available) and sufficient storage material.
Prerequisites: Course "Photography with the digital camera" or "Basic course for photo amateurs analogue/digital" or comparable knowledge.
