Botanical nomenclature and labelling in the Botanic Garden

Lecture by Sten Gillner, Head of the Chemnitz Botanical Garden

How are plants named? What systematics does botanical nomenclature follow and how are plants labelled in the botanical garden? Lecture with demonstration of laser engraving.

BirdNET, identifying bird calls with the help of the app

Bird tour and hike with Stefan Kahl
Location: Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147, meeting point in front of the main building
Participation: free of charge

How can computers learn to recognise birds by sound? BirdNET is a research platform that aims to recognise birds from sounds on a large scale. BirdNET aims to provide innovative tools for conservationists, biologists and birdwatchers alike and can now recognise around 3000 of the most common bird species worldwide. BirdNET is also available as a free app for smartphones (for Android and iOS).

Morning seminar on edible mushrooms and plants

Venue: NABU Nature Conservation Centre in the Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147
Participation: 15 euros p. p. (including lunch snack), registration required by 29 August.

In the morning seminar you will learn about poisonous and edible mushrooms on a 1.5 hour excursion. You will then be shown various herbs from the garden and the meadow and collect them. At the end we will prepare a delicious lunch with savoury dishes. You are welcome to bring a basket for collecting.

Venue: NABU Nature Conservation Centre in the Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147

Apple harvest on NABU orchards - work assignment

Location: Botanical Garden, Leipziger Straße 147, meeting point: car park
Participation: free of charge
Registration required

NABU harvests apples from its own orchards to make its own apple juice. Volunteers are needed to help collect the apples.
