Special exhibition: Proboscidea
Location: TIETZ, Museum of Natural History 1st floor
Admission: Visiting the special exhibition on proboscideans is free of charge. A valid admission ticket is required for the tour of the permanent and special exhibition.
The freely accessible area between the Museum of Natural History and the Neue Sächsische Galerie currently offers an insight into the evolution of proboscideans. Scientific volunteer Christopher Herrmann found an unexpected number of proboscidean fossils while working in the museum's collection magazine. This gave rise to the idea of thematising the evolution of elephants using objects from our collection. You can get up close and personal with elephants, mammoths and the like in the display cases.

"Tacheles!" Chemnitz Museum Night

For 150 years, the Chemnitz Museum of Natural History has been continuously showing "Tacheles" - facts, fascinating artefacts from the natural history of Chemnitz and the surrounding area. We bring millions of years old worlds to life, allow our guests to participate in the exploration of fossils
fossils and build a bridge to the present day with living animals and plants.
Offers:
- 6 to 8 pm, experience insects up close.
- 6 pm to 1 am, The world of sharks - a journey to the most fascinating hunters of the oceans with shark memory - match all the pictures correctly and win a little surprise!
- 6 to 10 pm, creative workshop with: Beeswax candles - Twist a candle and light up the night! and Glitter tattoo nature - Become the star of the night with your glitter tattoo!
- 6 to 10 p.m., museum rally - Explore the fantastic world of collecting in a quiz and win a little surprise!
- 6 to 10 p.m., Time travel to the Permian: Experience the forest in VR - What did the forest look like when it wasn't fossilised? The virtual experience takes you into a 291-million-year-old world and gives you a preview of the upcoming exhibition.
- 11 pm, joint guided tour through the stacks of the Museum für Naturkunde and the Neue Sächsische Galerie

News about the largest ammonite in the world - lecture by PD Dr Christina Ifrim

The largest ammonite in the world comes from Germany. It has been world-famous since its discovery in 1895, but was previously not comparable with other ammonites due to its size. Similar ammonites have been found in North America. Christina Ifrim, the scientific director of the Jura Museum in Eichstätt, has worked on the historical and many previously unknown specimens with an international team of researchers and has investigated two previously little-known sites in Mexico and England. There, the giants lie in the field, which has the advantage that the sequences can be easily dated using modern methods. The journeys were associated with a series of adventures, but the effort was worth it: thanks to the many new field data and specimens, the largest ammonite in the world is now much better understood.
The lecture provides insights into an international research project that has yielded a whole series of surprising findings.

On the Sonnenberg, the Museum of Natural History is creating "Tacheles" - with the scientific excavation for the Chemnitz Petrified Forest, which has been running since 2012. Piece by piece, the image of a 291-million-year-old ecosystem that was preserved for eternity by a catastrophic volcanic eruption, like Pompeii, is being pieced together from ever new pieces of the puzzle.

Welcome to the "Window into Earth's History"! Explore our excavation site with a quiz. Dig up your own fossilised treasures in the "Geological Classroom". Or how about a glitter tattoo of your favourite fossil?
Unbelievable, but true: a fossilised forest lies beneath the city of Chemnitz. We're digging up a piece of it here. Fossils such as Chemnitzion, a prehistoric amphibian, provide insights into the former primeval forest. It was covered by volcanic ash 291 million years ago and thus preserved.
